PHUKET: A Chinese tourist has been found dead in a pool at a Phuket resort early today, say police in southern Phuket.
The tourist, believed to be a young woman, is reported to have drowned at the Cruiser Island Resort on Koh Lon, a short speedboat ride from Chalong or Rawai.
Details will be carried on Phuketwan as soon as they become available. With the rising number of Chinese visitors has come an increase in deaths from drownings at beaches, on snorkelling day-trips and in resorts.
The Cruiser Island Resort promotes itself online as ''a private oriental beach holiday in luxury air-conditioned villas.''
''Enjoy the ultimate al fresco dining on our beach, experience the cool shade on the beach and watch the world go by (slowly).''
Koh Lon has been eyed by major international brands for a five-star resort but so far remains a delightful out-of-the-way haven, home to mostly Muslim villagers.
A boatload of Rohingya fleeing persecution in Burma was apprehended off Koh Lon in January, providing the first evidence that women and children were also being forced to flee ethnic cleansing in Burma.
