Bangkok a Big Loser as April Flight Arrivals Slump

Thursday, May 28, 2009
ARRIVALS of international visitors to Bangkok's main airport dropped by more than 15 percent in April year-on-year.

Largest of the declines came among East Asian travellers, who slipped by 25.93 percent overall with Koreans ( down 42.70 percent) and Chinese (down 29.66 percent) leading the way.

East Asian visitors represented more than 40 percent of arrivals in April, the month that brought the Songkran skirmishes in the streets of Bangkok and the red-shirt invasion of the Asean Plus Six summit resort in Pattaya.

Almost 90,000 Japanese visitors arrived in April 2008 but their numbers fell by 19.19 percent in April 2009.

As Phuketwan has already reported, numbers for Phuket were just 4.53 percent down on last year.

At Suvarnabhumi, other big drops came among Malaysians (down 24.17 percent) Singaporeans (down 24.84 percent) and Vietnamese (down 38.29 percent).

Europeans declined by 5.23 percent overall with Norway (up 27.45 percent) Switzerland (up 6.53 percent) Finland (up 4.5 percent) and Britain (up 2.15 percent) bucking the trend.

The number of Britons arriving in April hit 59,112, behind only China (64,144). The number of American visitors slid by 14.23 percent to 39,206.

A total of 43,047 Indians arrived, almost the same number as last April.

Australian numbers declined by 16.36 percent to 34,487. Middle East visitors increased by 9.84 percent to 33,905.
