smh.com.au Letter: I returned to Australia recently from Thailand two weeks ahead of schedule because Thai immigration rules do not allow me to extend my initial 28-day visa by more than 15 days, down from the extra 28 days allowed previously. It seems odd that Thailand actively discourages tourists when the hotels are empty, the markets are deserted and its tourism industry faces a long recovery after the damage to the country's reputation from the red and yellow shirts. Those looking for a longer holiday in Asia might be better off in Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia. - Michael Woods

@Michael Woods: Or get yourself a tourist visa. Even with return entry costs nothing right know. You can stay 60+60+60 days. Vietnam / Cambodia better?

@Michael Woods, sounds like you entered with an entry permit (entry stamp on arrival) that is not a visa, can only extend that 7 days. If you enter with a tourist visa, as Lena pointed out, you will be stamped in for about 57-58 days, then you go to immigration a few days prior to expiry and get an extension for 30 days more, cost is 1900 Baht, bring a passport photo with you, complete the form, takes 5 minutes. After this extension, you will need to leave Thailand and return (get another tourist visa if you are trying to stay long term). If you leave Thailand but return on a land route for an entry permit only, then you are only given 15 days entry, if you fly in, you get 30 days (28-29 days) entry. Hope this helps.
