Aussies on Phuket Jockey for Position to Celebrate Horsey High Season

Tuesday, November 5, 2013
PHUKET: Australians on Phuket will have to enjoy their fun without the extra protection of an island honorary consul for a while yet, a spokesperson for the embassy in Bangkok said today.

High season usually brings high jinx on the part of Aussies - beginning with the Melbourne Cup, run and won today by favorite Fiorente from Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos.

Writing in a national Australian newspaper chain, a comedian columnist said today: ''The Spring Racing Carnival is actually a celebration of all things bogan.

''Where bogans from all levels of society roll around like ecstatic pigs in their most bogan pastimes. ''

On Phuket, the running of the Melbourne Cup usually provides an excuse for drinking champagne before noon. Some will attempt to carry the habit through November, December and January.

The comedian didn't appear to be joking when he said Australia's horse racing festival was ''a celebration of excess and addictions. Of which I share at least a few, and I don't have a huge problem with others indulging so openly and freely.

''It's just that everybody is so busy pretending that it's anything else.''

In perhaps the last of his sendoff interviews, former Australian honorary consul Larry Cunningham - a great fan of horseracing - tells interviewer Lana Willocks at windowonphuket.com:

''Some of the calls I get are just insanity. One time a woman called saying, 'You've got to help me. We're flying out a 6 o'clock tonight and I've ordered these suits from the tailor and they're not here yet!'

''Or someone will call saying: ''I'm at the airport now and I've got these crocodile shoes and I don't think I'll be able to take them into Australia!''

''A lot of people come out sexually when they're here. One guy told me, ''I don't know how to say this, but I have a bit of a problem. I'm not gay, but I've woken up in a compromising position with a ladyboy.

'''Do I report it to you?' I told him, no, just wait till you get back to Australia. They're better equipped to deal with this sort of thing.''

Bogans? Whatever can the comedian be talking about?

A replacement for Mr Cunningham is unlikely to be chosen before the new year.

Yes, let's all celebrate beating horses viciously with sticks and the 25,000, "unfit" horses gone to slaughter in Australia alone. And let's not forget the 5000 horses that lost their lives on tracks worldwide last year, most likely suffocated to death with bath salt IVs.

So how do you feel about cows, pigs and chickens Christy?

I don't advocate treating any animal inhumanely, in any way, for any purpose. and horse racing is as inhumane a sport as it gets.
