Phuket's tourism chiefs launch Andaman Travel Trade 2009

New Andaman Travel Slogan Comes With Music

Thursday, July 30, 2009
PHUKET and the other Andaman provinces are promoting ''Three Destinations, One Thousand Activities'' to begin a major recovery for this coming high season.

And it will be the marketing concept for Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga for the next five years, key tourism authorities for the region announced yesterday.

Launching with Andaman Travel Trade 2009, a convention from November 26-29 at Central Festival, the campaign hopes to attract 300 travel companies from around the world.

Charter flights are the big hope for Phuket's coming high season, with bigger and better things on the way for tourism.

Virgin Blue is launching flights from Perth and Sydney during the Songkran Festival next year.

The advice for resorts and other travel businesses is: keep your prices low and appealing this high season, otherwise future high seasons may be slower and less profitable.

Restoration of Phuket's premium position in the market needs a three-year strategy, says Methee Tanmanatragul, President of the Southern Chapter of the Thai Hotels Association.

''The politics in Thailand will take that long to be resolved,'' he said. ''Phuket must do what it can in the meantime. We have a plan.''

The travel trade fair is a beginning, and the three key Andaman provinces will have 100 booths from which to promote the region's brightest and best.

New markets are expected to be unlocked at the convention, with the Miss Poland contestants helping with promotions.

With the Asean Plus Six Summit locked in to planning for October, tourism officials plan something quite different for September: a Phuket Music Festival.

Centring on concerts to be held on Karon beach, the strategy is to invite major bands and performers from around the region, and their fans.

Superstars from Korea and Japan will be among those high on the list.

Ranong and Trang have been added to the Andaman grouping of provinces and are expected to attract their share of visitors because of their get-away-from-it-all qualities.
