Karsten Lange and Patharanid Morida, accused of a Phuket burglary

Accused Phuket Expat Fails in 'Fly Me Out' Bid

Thursday, August 5, 2010
GERMAN expat Karsten Lange tried to escape arrest in a frantic dash across Phuket early today after his connection with a house burglary was revealed, police allege.

At one stage early this morning, 45-year-old Mr Karsten told his girlfriend he was planning to fly home. He did not make it, bringing to an end two days of high drama that began on Tuesday afternoon at a local market in Kamala.

The woman victim of the house burglary spotted her stolen genuine Gucci bag on the shoulder of another woman at the local market.

The burgled woman moved closer and was even more astonished when the woman carrying her stolen Gucci bag reached into it to pay for some durian . . . and pulled out a stolen Elle-brand purse.

Burglary victim Wiyada Rangsak, whose house was raided back in May, played detective and took down the registration number of the other woman's vehicle. Then she went straight to Kamala police station.

Using the police computer data base to locate the address for the vehicle, officers were able to arrest Patharanid Morida, 29, about 6.30pm last night at the house she shares with Mr Lange.

Mr Lange, still being interviewed by police at Kamala this afternoon, was warned last night over the telephone by his girlfriend, who was already in police custody.

She later told him she had slipped free from police, and they arranged to meet in Patong outside a 7-Eleven store near Jungceylon.

A hectic game of cat-and-mouse ensued and eventually Mr Lange was arrested about 5am.

At one stage he said he was heading to the airport to fly off the island, but police were able to determine that he was actually in Chalong.

Khun Wiyada told police she was robbed of a 42-inch television, a CD player, the Gucci shoulder bag, the Elle purse and a quantity of perfume and jewellery when her home was burgled in May.

Police allege that Khun Patharanid was wearing a necklace belonging to Khun Wiyada when officers arrested her yesterday.

Colonel Nathapakin Kwanchaipruek said Mr Lange denied any connection with the theft. He said he had bought the items for his girlfriend.

The colonel said that Mr Lange was on bail on charges of possession of marijuana and theft dating back to last year.

Police in Phuket have a computer data base to locate the address for a vehicle? They Dept of Transport has a centralised system connected to the police?
So why in other cases when a victim has the license plate nothing happens?

"So why in other cases when a victim has the license plate nothing happens?"

Because they are not reported by the kind of Thais who buy legit Gucci and LV.

Editor Comment:

Perhaps, but that would be unfair on the policemen who actually do uphold the law for rich and poor and aren't influenced by obvious wealth. What's more likely is that the links to the database are relatively new.

I was attacked once and reported a license plate to Chalong police, they did not look it up as far as I know, at least not while I was in the police station and they did not tell me they would or could look it up and never got back to me.
They only sent a patrol to the area where it happened.

I was the victim in a hit and run, gave the police the license number, and so did the Thais that saw it happen. Nothing ...

I had a man walk up to me as I was loading my car trunk, ask me the time then grab my crotch some years back on mid Bang-Tao. I got his scooter license number, reported it - nothing was ever done as far as I know.

The owner of a neighboring beach bar told me he had been lurking around all season harassing women and she was frightened of him.

I think he could have been same man who stabbed and killed the young Swedish woman, Hannah Backlund on Mai Khao on March 15 two years ago.
