The Phuket Brewery opened twice with froth and fizz but the music has died

Phuket Falls Silent as Brewery Music Stops

Sunday, May 30, 2010
THE PHUKET BREWERY has closed, with question marks hanging over the island's ability to sustain a large performance venue. With the closure went 200 jobs.

The landmark auditorium enjoyed a second chance by reopening on January 29 as Whisky and Moonlight (Long Lao Sang Chan) but failed to meet the expectations of a second entrepreneur and closed on May 20, with little prospect of a third opportunity.

The problem seems to be, according to experienced venue manager Vitoon Janboonkeaw, the difficulty in attracting an audience that could consistently fill the 2000-seat venue on Phuket. ''Not enough customers, the place is too big,'' Khun Vitoon said.

It's a property with many advantages but a boutique brewery attached to the auditorium was an extra drain on outgoings. The place was marketed strongly, with free whisky in the first month.

''I've opened many places and if they do not work within the first few months, they are unlikely to work,'' Khun Vitoon said.

The Phuket Brewery is centrally located opposite Tesco-Lotus supermarket, on the bypass road in Phuket City. It has the capacity to hold 2000 people on two levels, all at dining tables, and with a good view of the large stage.

Khun Vitoon runs 13 other venues, mostly in Bangkok, and some of similar size that do good business. While Phuket people seem to appreciate Carabao and other Thai folk-rock bands, they do not appear to share a love of a good night out often enough to sustain a business of this scale.

What seemed to be a good idea when the Phuket Brewery first opened in November 2008 has now suffered two strikes.

''Phuket may not be big enough just yet,'' Khun Vitoon said. ''And the place itself? It is too big.''

> "And the place itself? It is too big."
Which says it all. Sometimes things start too big instead of checking out the opportunities and possibly expanding later...

people just can't seem to get out of Patong...that's where all the entertainment is.

They refused to sell any beer other than their own home-made brew, which was awful. The food menu was limited, and the choice of entertainment was woeful. Had they catered for customers tastes rather than their own whims, they would still be in business...and booming. It would be the perfect venue for an entrepreneur with enough nous to bring in big name acts which would pull in the crowds.

What about a conference venue or a very romantic wedding venue - should be able to compete with the Phuket City hotels that cater for weddings all the time

PHUKET is so difficult to attract good audiences to attend any type of venue, both thai and western entertainment.
Any amount over 500 is hard work, Little Chang has a great idea that has a good chance to work.

A joint venture with THAI and WESTERN PROS COULD MAKE IT WORK.

A MULTI PURPOSE VENUE....

Who in his right mind would go out for a night in Samkong ?

There's nothing there except this huge bar. People want variety and a choice of options.

Do they really expect people to take a Bt 500 tuk-tuk ride out there just to see if this place appeals to them ?

If it doesn't, they're in for another Bt 500 to get back to where you have more bars to choose from.

This project was doomed from the very beginning. Whoever was behind it had no clue of what he was doing.

A lot of Thais seem to think tourists want to spend their time next to shopping malls and main roads.

Just look at the large hotel opposite Central Festival. Would you want to spend your holiday watching the traffic jam ?

Khun Vitoon is wrong. It's not that there are not enough customers. He just built his establishment in the wrong place.

Editor: We believe the venue targetted Thais, not expat tourists.

Fair enough. If that was his target group, then I am wrong. I have very little or no clue what Thai customers want from a business like that.

Judging by how it all turned out in the end, apparently Khun Vitoon didn't know either.

Shame. Main problem - too big. Other problems - right next to main road, not that nice to sit outside... and too far from tourist areas to really attract a tourist crowd, plus of course not many tourists are likely to want to see Carabao or Sek Loso.

Maybe if Elton John played there!

Some of the concerts were packed, but during the week I went a few times and it was kind of embarrassing - maybe 20 or 30 people in that huge hall with a half hearted house band wondering what they were playing for.

Beer at the Brewery I thought was OK, at least a change from the normal. Food not great though.

Well, thanks for trying. Guess it will all be knocked down to build some more beautiful shophouses?

The Brewery was trying to attract local Thai customers? Maybe they should have written their billboards in Thai then.

It was a bad location for tourists, no one wants to be so far from their home destination when they are out partying, not when the beachside towns have so much to offer.

Agree, big name musicians might have saved them.

Editor: Phuket Brewery is - or was - located in Phuket City, where most Thais live, and central for all the rest (opposite Tesco-Lotus). Road signs these days are in Thai and English. Many Thais can read both languages.

it's too bad, actually. i had a few good nights there--once seeing t-bone and another night with a group of thai friends seeing a thai band. would be nice if the place could be resurrected...

It's a shame, make nice apartments though.

Every time I tried to go they didn't even open up the main area, ended up in the milk bar or whatever it was meant to be.
