The site for a restaurant soon atop the Phuket Sky Dream

Dream Resort Brings Life to Phuket's Hills

Wednesday, May 20, 2009
A ROOFTOP restaurant will open off the Bypass Road next month, giving outsiders a great excuse to see why Phuket's hills are producing some fine alternatives to coastal sameness.

One thoroughly modern eye-catcher above Phuket City is the Sky Dream Hotel-Phuket, which offers views and a thoroughly modular take on the shape a resort should be.

Constructed on two rai, the Sky Dream has been attracting families and honeymooners since it opened two years ago.

It's just 12 rooms, but quite stunning in the shapes and the architectural vision that make it stand out. Boring it is not.

Check in at the base then catch the elevator up . . . at every turn, there are corridors stretching into the distance and shapes that offer delightfully different perspectives.

Group Marketing Manager Samon Yutthayod says the rooms are extra large, ranging up to 90 metres, and each is different.

Rates begin at 1500 baht and rise, just like that elevator at the entrance.

As prices go, it would seem ridiculous to stay in a ''box'' in some other Phuket City hotel when the Sky Dream offers so much more of an adventure.

The executive studio with kitchen runs to 84 square metres at 3960 baht a night. The bedroom is upstairs on the mezzanine, taking out 30 square metres.

Long-term rates are available. It's little wonder the place is popular.

''We have 80 percent occupancy rates,'' Ms Samon says.

''We attract lots of interest through the Internet, especially from Europe.

''Once they've stayed, people keep coming back.''

Those who do not have a view out over the city, as far as Saphan Hin public park, can overlook the waterfall on the hillside.

The lucky occupants of one particular suite can take in sea view one way, and the waterfall from the other room.

What's impressive is the uniqueness of the building, which was designed and decorated by the Thai owners.

''It's so quiet up here, but everything is easy to reach,'' Ms Samon said. ''People who want absolute privacy really enjoy what we have on offer.''

There's a fitness room and a swimming pool with great views, too.

Next year, another 40 rooms are to be added in a second building.

And look out for Sky 2, being planned for Patong next year. It will be a 70-room, four-star hotel.

The family also runs The Lantern residence and the Sunnypoint resort-residence.
