Phuket wins five-star facilities for its sporting and conference future

Budget Set for Phuket Sports Centre: Deputy PM

Saturday, November 7, 2009
PHUKET'S sports and conference centre can begin in 2012 and be finished by 2015, Deputy PM Kobsat Supawasu said yesterday.

He was speaking after visiting the site of the 3.2 billion baht facility across 150 rai in the north of Phuket, not far from the landmark Tachatchai checkpoint.

The budget has been committed, he said. Details of the precise elements that will make up the centre have yet to be finalised.

''This will be a special project to boost Thailand's economic recovery,'' he said. On the topic of tourism, he said the quality of service and good products was important.

''People in tourism also need to develop quality skills,'' he said. ''If we get government and private sector cooperation, then Phuket's future is assured.''

Khun Kobsat also announced funding of 100 million baht for a 4000-seat gymnasium at Saphan Hin park in Phuket City. The gymnasium would be a suitable venue for young people especially from all over Thailand to come for annual competitions in a variety of sports from 2012.

The Deputy PM made a one-day visit to Phuket to discuss a number of topics.
