Big C 'Likely to Win' Carrefour on Phuket

Monday, November 15, 2010
THE BUSINESS behind the BIG C brand firmed as the most likely winner of Carrefour assets in Thailand today. Carrefour has a network of 40 stores in Thailand, with one in Phuket at the Jungceylon mall in Patong.

Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA, a French grocer, already controls Big C Supercenter Pcl in Thailand. Big C today asked Thailand's stock exchange to temporarily halt trading of its shares because the company ''is in the process of disclosing significant information,'' it said in a statement.

Carrefour is in the process of auctioning off assets in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to permit the brand to springboard into China and Indonesia. Assets in Thailand have been estimated at 35,000 million baht.

A Carrefour spokeswoman declined to comment to Bloomberg finance news service today. So did spokespeople for Casino and Tesco, the British-based chain that was believed to be a bidder.

It's unlikely to see the same products diversification as they have in Carrefour. Shopping at Big C or Lotus is simply boring.

I agree with Jean-Paul but would also ask why Big C & Tesco Lotus have 30+ checkouts yet only around 6 or 7 are ever open at one time. Carrefour do a much better job and we as a family will be sorry if Big C change the Carrefour formula to that of their own. Still, we have Villa Market which I suppose will be worth spending the additional petrol money to get there and back. I'll wait and see what they do with Carrefour first.

(Hey Ed - Pity they don't have a Morrison's/Safeway here eh!)
