A RECORD number of 3000 or more participants are expected on Phuket for this year's Bike Week, which opens today with a seminar on road safety.
While some visitors from the Middle East and Indonesia have cancelled out of concerns about red shirt protests in Bangkok, the vast majority of bikers are flying to Phuket direct or riding in from Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.
About 40 bikers are making the journey from Vietnam this year for the first time, organiser Wittaya ''Sumon'' Singkalan told Phuketwan. ''More than 1000 bikers are coming from Malaysia with about 500 due to arrive from Singapore,'' he added.
About 2000 riders are expected from around Thailand. ''We've had more help with promotion this year so it should be the best Bike Week yet.''
The first Phuket Tattoo Convention opens today as a prelude to the main Bike Week activities, with the music festival at Loma Park in Patong expected to attract huge audiences of bikers and non-bikers. A parade of 400 bikers takes place on Friday with the grand opening in Patong.
Latest arrival and departure figures from Phuket airport show record numbers of visitors are continuing to come to Phuket.
