Dive! Dive! Dive! Rajpracha's goalkeeper gains some more attention

FC Phuket Wins! Too Many Expats: Opposition Forfeit

Tuesday, March 1, 2011
IN AN AMAZING reversal of fortune, FC Phuket has won Saturday's exciting 1-1 draw against Rajpracha Thailand FC after a protest.

Rajpracha Thailand FC sent the names of six expat players to officials before the match at Surakul Stadium in Phuket City when the quota limit for expats in the team is five.

So FC Phuket gains three points instead of losing one for a home draw, and shoots up the Division One table to third spot.

Phuket also gains the benefit of what amounts to a 2-0 victory in goal aggregate.

Bringing on two Thai players as substitutes for two expats in the dying minutes of the match failed to stave off the protest and today's forfeit.

It was a just result after a game in which Rajpracha players made more dives than a nuclear submarine. Even the goalkeeper needed medical treatment not once but twice.

Rajpracha completed the game with 10 men, and were probably fortunate it was not nine.

When the history of FC Phuket's rise and rise is written, the chapter on the first Division One match at home in Phuket City will make fascinating reading. The crowd of 2000 plus enjoyed every minute - and all the FC Phuket ''Hulk supporters will be chuckling now.

An even larger turnout from a growing band of ''Hulk'' fans is expected in Phuket City when FC Phuket meet Big Bang Chulalongkorn University at Surakul Stadium on March 13. Kickoff is at 6pm.

Tickets are 50 baht for adults and 20 baht for children.

"So FC Phuket gains three points instead of losing one for a home draw, and shoots up the Division One table to third spot."

Honest question: Is there a different scoring system used for Thai leagues? Normally, you would receive one point for a draw--home or away.

Also, any reason as to re-naming Phuket Town to "Phuket City"? Have Thai officials changed the name recently?

Finally, who proofs this stuff? You folks must be pushing stories out in a hurry.

The draw became a 2-0 victory to Phuket with the ruling that the opposition cheated. A home draw would have cost them a point.

Phuket Town became Phuket City about eight years ago when its population rose above 70,000. Only the small town thinkers who haven't yet perceived the island's coming transformation into one metropolis still call it Phuket Town.

Nobody ''proofs'' this stuff. It's not a print product.

Sill, teams don't "lose" points from draws and the way it's originally written implies such. Rather, teams receive one point for draws. Only in relation to a win, would a draw cost a team TWO points (draw = 1, win = 3).

And I see the PW's editor takes the prescriptive approach rather than descriptive approach when it comes to naming an urban dwelling. I'll call it Phuket "City" once the officials tell me the name's changed. I lack the required amount of arrogance to do otherwise.

Phuket City has a mayor and a fully-fledged council. Old Phuket Town has a preservation society. The choice is yours. The local newspaper moved with the times when the change was announced, stuck with Phuket City for five years, then changed on a whim back to ''Town.'' What you call arrogance most people call progress.

''Only in relation to a win, would a draw cost a team TWO points (draw = 1, win = 3).'' Are you just another petty point-scorer, Nathan?

just a note for you: yes, the difference between "town" and "city" is a bit petty; however, as a newsman, misinforming your readers ought to give you pause. please do try to understand the point-scoring system. when you do, you'll realise your mistake. it was a basic error and i was only trying to help.

Always prepared to be corrected, but I didn't write the article and will await a check with the Thai authorities because it's possible the system is scored differently. However, thank you for making the, er, point.

The local newspaper, having opted correctly for Phuket City then reverted to Phuket Town, is confused about the difference. We are not, never have been and never will be. Nothing petty about the difference between a city and a town: like I said, that's called progress.

I recall editing the story years ago when Phuket Town was officially upgraded to a city status. Sorry, can't find the original story but an (unfortunately unsourced) Wikipedia article mentions the change. Some people seem to think the change had something to do with tourism promotion. It does not - it's about how the municipality is governed.

If it's still Phuket Town then somebody better let the Mayor of Phuket City know quickly.
