THE FASHION was fantastic. Jungceylon's catwalk came alive with beautiful people in some of the most stunning creations you could expect to see anywhere.
Phuket Fashion Week's second showing last night did have some flaws, it's true. However, the concept has plenty to recommend it.
Delightful models strutting one of the longest catwalks you could hope to see, surrounded by waterspouts . . . few parades anywhere have such a dramatic setting.
But did Phuket people turn up in numbers to support a brave, bold attempt to regenerate the island's economy? Did last night's second parade get the promotion it deserved from the local media?
Not judging by the size of the small crowd, which was a shame. It's not as though there is a more significant event on the island at present.
Yet those who constantly cry out for more quality international events on the island were nowhere to be seen.
It's true that fashion alone does not pull football-sized crowds.
But last night, it was Phuket that performed badly, not the models or the singers at the concert that followed.
The Phuket Mermaids swimsuit showing at Jungceylon in Patong tonight, with the promise of an appearance by Tata Young, may do better.
Let's hope so, for Phuket's sake.
Last night was the night for VIPs, with the Deputy Minister of Commerce, Alongkorn Ponlaboot, looking on with the Governor and the Chief of Police, among other guests.
Thai Royal Silk was the highlight, with the models in stunning long dresses and shimmering jewellery.
At least one question was answered: what do models do when they are not modelling? They join the photographers, have fun looking at the other models at work, and enjoy take their own photographs.
The lesson from last night for organisers is that the structure of the seating needs attention.
While about 40 media snappers were in a prime spot, the VIPs were seated well back, in front of the stage but a considerable way from the action.
With a long catwalk extending from the Jungceylon ship, the organisers need to consider making the event cosier by putting seating along both sides of the watery catwalk, as is done at most parades.
Intimacy is important. There is little to compare with the sight of a stunning woman in a stunning dress, looking in your direction.
More people on Phuket should get to know what that feels like. Why not start tonight?
