TWO SISTERS have drowned in a canal in Patong. Mimi, aged 12, went to the canal at the southern end of Nanai Road about 7.30pm on Monday to cool off, then got out of her depth and into difficulties in the Kok Moo Klong.
Her sister Asu, 19, jumped in to try to save Mimi.
The girls' bodies were fetched from the water soon after. The girls, children of Burmese workers, only have one name.
Public Health officials say that girls in Thailand are less likely to be able to swim than boys.
The case echoes an earlier incident this year at Nai Harn beach when four sisters were caught in a rip. Three survived.
One succumbed days later in hospital despite the valiant effort of a tourist on the beach to save her by applying cpr.
Official figures record 57 deaths from drowning in and around Phuket in 2009, including seven on board the Dive Asia 1 that sank last March.
