Bell at the entrance to the Third Naval Area at Cape Panwa

Phuket Red Shirts to Start Thai 'No Coup' Rally

Thursday, February 4, 2010
RED-SHIRT protesters are planning to rally outside the Navy station at Cape Panwa at 1pm today. The rally is part of an attempt by red-shirts around Thailand to win the backing of the military.

Phuket's red-shirt leader, Sunthorn Toma, told Phuketwan that a bouquet of flowers would be presented to officers about 1pm.

''We don't know yet how many people will be involved,'' he said. ''We simply want to hand over the flowers to cheer up the Navy.''

The red-shirts are also opposed to a coup being mounted against the existing coalition government led by the Democrat Party, which took power 13 months ago with yellow-shirt support.

Today's event is likely to remain peaceful.

Phuket's yellow-shirt leader, Aparat Chutikamjorn, told Phuketwan that local supporters had already been told by the movement's Bangkok leaders to allow the red-shirts to go ahead without interference.

''We don't plan on creating unnecessary problems,'' she said.

One source in the Cape Panwa region, on Phuket's east coast, said that there were some concerns that locals with no official yellow-shirt affiliation may object to the red-shirt gathering.

A national strategy by red-shirt supporters to appeal to the military begins today and will continue in other provinces.

The cut and thrust of the arm-wrestle between the colors seldom affects Phuket, where the yellow-shirts have a large following.
