World's Best: Phuket Loses Out to Trendier Thai Island in the Sun

Thursday, March 28, 2013
PHUKET: Travelers have chosen Phuket as Asia's sixth best island for 2013, according to Tripadvisor - but another Thai island figures in the World's Top 10.

Koh Tao in Surat Thani lands a place at No.8, demonstrating that Phuket is being usurped by less famous rivals that have greater natural beauty.

World's top islands, acording to the online repository of reviews, are 1. Ambergris Caye, Belize Cayes; 2 St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands; 3 Bora Bora, Society Islands; 4 San Juan Island, Washington; 5 Santorini, Cyclades; 6 Isla Mujeres and 7 Moorea, Society Islands.

Koh Tao nudges out 9 Easter Island, Chile and 10
Nosy Be, Antsiranana Province.

Tripadvisor reports of Koh Tao: ''Drifting serenely in the Gulf of Thailand, the palm-fringed island of Koh Tao takes its name from the abundant sea turtles that reside on its shores. White sand beaches sheltered by steep hills - some only accessible with four-wheel drive vehicles - and 300 days of sun per year invite long afternoons of lounging.''

Not that different to Phuket, just a bit more trendy and a whole lot less crowded, perhaps.

When it comes to the best islands in Asia, Koh Tao heads the list followed by 2 Nusa Lembongan, Bali; 3 Ko Lanta, Krabi Province; 4 Gili Trawangan, Gili Islands; 5 Boracay, Visayas; Phuket at number six; 7 Koh Samui, Surat Thani Province; 8 Palawan, Mimaropa; 9 Langkawi, Langkawi District; 10 Havelock Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Of Phuket, Tripadvisor says:

''Phuket offers a rainbow spectrum of spectacular vacation sights from blue lagoons and pink sunsets to orange-robed monks. Three wheeled-Tuk Tuks, taxis, buses and long tailed boats transport visitors between these marvels. Phuket's south coast offers its most popular beaches. The north is more tranquil. Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and Patong Beach are popular spots. Diving, snorkeling, wind surfing and sailing are just a few active options. Inland, forested hills, mountains and cliffs wait to be explored.''

Yes, well. Keep your eyes open for those three-wheeled tuk-tuks. And enjoy those south coast popular beaches. Better tell Tripadvisor that Phi Phi is actually another island, too.

Three wheeled tuk tuk's,Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga and blue Lagoons (A lagoon is a shallow body of water separated from a larger body of water by barrier islands or reefs), there must be another Phuket, where can I find it.

Anyone who believes anything written on Tripadvisor (a most misused tool) also believes in Santa Claus.

Reading Trip Advisors review, prooves they have never been here. 3 wheeled tuktuks have never been here.
The blue lagoons have all gone.
These are reviews like I used to do for Hotel Companies. All made up by sitting in an office.

Somebody should ask TripAdvisor for the names of the beaches on Phuket's south coast.

Lol, voting obviously stacked by the tens of thousands of scuba diving "interns" who perpetually inhabit Koh Tao.
