World Prepares to Remember Tsunami That Made Phuket a Household Word

Monday, December 22, 2014
PHUKET: The memorials in Khao Lak and Nam Khem are spruced up and ready for intense interest in the 10th anniversary of the tsunami on Friday.

At the Tsunami Victim Cemetery in Baan Bang Maruan, where 369 unidentified people are buried, the grass is now showing on the newly levelled war-graves style facility.

Thailand and the world is remembering the catastrophe that took place around the Indian Ocean, killing tens of thousands of people and triggering a reaction of unparalleled generosity.

It was a shocking event but it made Phuket a household word around the globe for the first time. In the years that followed, Phuket boomed.

At the time of the tsunami, there was a chance for a fresh beginning. Ten years on, Phuket and the surrounding region will again be the focus of the world's attention, just for one special day.
