Woman 'Bitten by Shark' at Phuket Beach Suffers Foot Wound
By Prasit Tarnsirisin Tuesday, September 1, 2015
PHUKET: An Australian woman ''bitten'' while in the sea off a Phuket beach was treated today for a deep wound in her foot amid a mystery about what had caused the injury.
Lifeguards took Jane Neame, 32, to Patong Hospital after the incident at neighboring Karon beach about 8.30am.
Phuket biologist Dr Kongkiat Kittiwattanawong said the would had the appearance of a shark bite but that the Andaman region was believed to be free from sharks that posed any danger to people.
''It's difficult to know what it might have been but it could have been perhaps a metre long,'' he said.
Sharks on Australian and South African beaches occasionally kill surfers and swimmers but Karon lifeguard chief Utane Singsom said in 20 years on the beach, he'd never heard of anyone suffering sharkbite.
Ms Neame was taken to Bangkok Phuket Hospital later in the day where doctors operated to repair her foot.

This is the typical irresponsible sensation seeking "journalism" I would expect from Phuketwan.

Go bite your bum, kevan.
''There's no confirmation on what kind of creature inflicted bite woulds in the foot of an Australian woman at a Phuket beach but there's speculation it could have been a small shark.''
The wounds are not the same above and under the foot which make me perplexed to the fact it is an attack by a shark! A medical expert about shark injuries in Australia may help better.

Bad luck for the poor lafy and what a great misfortune for the last few sharks remained in Phuetk that now will be decimated mercilessly ...

Top of the foot looks nasty!! Amazing that there could be a shark alive in the region, except for something so small that it was not worth finning. What about a large fish denied a good feed due to overfishing ? .....

More likely a large trigger fish protecting her young if near any rocks. Seen bites off small reef sharks and nothing like that. But then again no expert but will forward this story to a friend of mine who is

A nasty wound, whatever it is . . .
After a few unsuccessful dives near Phuket in recent years in a hopeful attempt to see any remaining sharks, i assumed they had all had their fins sent to China to make soup by now.

When we type: "injury by triggerfish" on Google, we see only a hole but no a long laceration as with the Australian bitten by a sea animal or cut by an object on the seabed at Karon Beach.
but when you type: "attack injury by shark" on Google, we have nasty pictures.

Always thought the sharks are around the Beach road or further back...

A terrible painful wound, but I would suggest, the high tides of the last few days, may have uncovered a recently broken bottle, with the top and bottom sections as it lay, still intact, and the unfortunate foot found it.
Less dramatic but a logical explanation.

Now that the story has changed from "200m from shore" to "waist deep water,"and "I think I stepped on it." I am changing my earlier statement from triggerfish to Kuhls ray, often incorrectly referred to as a blue spotted sting ray, or one of the other many types of rays we have in the region. Their long bony stinger is capable of this kind of damage, and we see a lot of them off Karon, often in the shallows.

Our story hasn't changed. Joe. Perhaps you've been reading less reliable publications? Anything you read there shouldn't be misrepresented here as factual.
I think this looks like a moray eel
Bite.
The top jaw have a middle tooth that will slize you open when you pull your foot away.
