Well Known Phuket Expat 'Big Dave' Collapses and Dies, Aged 43

Tuesday, August 26, 2014
PHUKET: ''Big Dave'' Munting, a much-loved resident of Phuket's Kamala district, suffered a fatal heart attack at the weekend at the age of 43.

Mr Munting, originally from Essex, had been living on Phuket for more than 10 years and was a familiar face in and around the Kamala region, north of Patong.

He had just completed a property development project around the Laguna area, one friend said today.

Peter Crisp, proprietor of the Aussie Pub in Kamala, said: ''You know you've lost a loveable character when the staff are in tears.''

''Big Dave,'' who hailed from Essex, appreciated a game of pool, Chelsea football club and rugby league, Mr Crisp said. ''Dave also loved a few beers,'' he added.

It's believed Mr Munting got out of bed feeling unwell about 4am on Sunday, sat on a sofa and then collapsed.

He lived with his friend Khun O and the couple were caring for Khun O's three-year-old niece.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

sorry for this guy, very sad, too early to die.

To be curious, what made him worth to be mentioned here?

I see he completed a property development project and liked to drink beer and to play pool.

And he was a nice person.

Enough for an obituary?

I assure not want to be respectless. But I remember all the other nice guys passed away already but never get a nice farewell here.

Editor Comment:

We generally respond when people contact us, Georg. This is not an obituary but a news article. There's no way we can know about all deaths.
What makes ''Big Dave's'' sad heart attack newsworthy, beyond the fact that he was a local identity in Kamala, is that people expect to live beyond 43.
Compare the deaths of Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby. Both were famous, and both died in 1977. But one singer was 74 and the other was just 42. Unexpected events are, tragically, newsworthy. RIP Big Dave.
