Phuketwan on a surprise visit
THE Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, is to visit Phuket again early next month to open the Asean (Plus One) education conference.
His visit was announced after officials from Bangkok and Phuket confirmed the details on the island today.
Khun Abhisit will be here, briefly, on April 6, between 10am and 11am.
The education conference runs from April 5 to April 8 at Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket, with the 10 Asean nations represented, along with Timor Leste (formerly East Timor).
Free education has become an important plank in the policy of the Democrat-led government of Khun Abhisit, who last visited Phuket to open the Asean (Plus Three) economic conference last month.
The more significant Asean (Plus Six) economic conference, postponed and shifted from Bangkok to Phuket because of the airports blockade in November, has now been rescheduled to Pattaya later in April, over the Songkran-Easter break.
When last on Phuket, the PM singled out Phuket for its recovery from the 2004 tsunami, telling other Asean members (Plus Three): ''I hope that our economic foundations will remain strong and help us withstand the global economic crisis, just like how Phuket has recovered.''
