A TRUSTED member of the staff of Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha has confessed to stealing 200 precious Buddhist amulets and selling them for 200,000 baht.
Police went to the island's administrative headquarters at Provincial Hall in Phuket City on Friday, soon after 5pm when most staff had left for the weekend, to arrest Jaratsri Prongphan, 50.
Khun Jaratsri, who lived in Phuket City, worked directly for the Governor. Her confession to the theft of the amulets is likely to shock and scandalise other members of the staff at Provincial Hall and in Phuket's other administrative centres.
A cabinet of the sacred Buddhist amulets was put on display at Provincial Hall on October 1. A count of the amulets on November 8 showed that 200 had gone missing.
Police said that Khun Jaratsri, who held the only key to the cabinet, confessed to taking 200 amulets and selling them for 200,000 baht. She is expected to appear in court today.
