Thai Airways aims to double its links between Bangkok and Bali, while AirAsia is contemplating regular flights between Macau and Phuket, acording to a report in the Macau Daily Times.
Air Asias Greater China general manager Celia Lao is quoted as the source, with the newspaper reporting that ''the carrier has been keeping a close eye on the development of the local economy and gaming industry, and once it is found that the demand will be able to support the operation of three flights weekly between Macau and Phuket, it is ready to launch the route at any time before the competitors can take advantage of this business opportunity.''
Phuket's gamblers can already hop a flight to Singapore, where there are now two large casinos, and AirAsia already flies to Hong Kong, which is a ferry ride from Macau, so the benefits of a direct Phuket-Macau link remain unclear.
Perhaps the winners in Macau's casinos will be looking for a sunny destination to spend their earnings.
Nond Kalinta, General Manager Germany, Austria and Eastern Europe for Thai Airways, told Phuketwan in Berlin that the airline's expansion plans included doubling the present number of flights between Bangkok and Bali from seven to 14 a week.
Services between Bangkok and Moscow will move from three times a week to four times a week, with other routes also performing strongly enough to deserve increased flights, he said.
I take it this is to take pissed off Aussies home, surely not to bring more out here! Does Thai Air read Phuket Wan? Do they not know the problems in Phuket? On Thursday I witnessed another three Aussies get ripped off in a jet-ski scam.
