The balcony from which the couple fell in Patong today

Swedish Man, Thai Friend Fall From Phuket Hotel Balcony

Monday, August 3, 2015
PHUKET: A Swedish man and his Thai friend were being treated at Patong Hospital today after toppling from a balcony at a Phuket hotel. Erik Conny Dahlin, 33, and Numpung Kumpong, 26, fell one storey to the ground at the Paradise Phuket Hotel, behind Jungceylon shopping mall.

Witnesses saw the pair fall and alerted authorities. It's not known why the couple fell off the balcony.

The reason is that all balcony railings are way too low in Thailand. Built for midgets?

No all of them, but certainly some balconies are not built with safety in mind.

Hockey,
In some cases they could be 3 meters tall and require a ladder to climb over them and some tourists would still manage to fall.

I suppose it has a lot to do with what you consider a railing should be used for?

Seeing the balcony railing and the chair behind it , it looks like railing work is ok in normal circumstances. Probably the time of the day,and the state of mind of the 2 friends made them a bit unbalanced? We can not ask hotel owners to make cages of their balconies.

Perhaps they were warming up for the main event - a fall from (real) height?

To be serious - alcohol and inherently low balconies are oil and water..as we have seen hundreds of times in the LOS

One could google BKK or Pattaya "flying club" for verification
