Karon beach, where sunbeds and umbrellas are earning fines

Sunbed Arrests at Phuket Beach

Wednesday, February 4, 2015
PHUKET: Workers at one Phuket beach who attempt to place umbrellas and sunbeds on the sand are being arrested and fined while at another, police have been asked not to make arrests.

Three workers were arrested and fined on Sunday at Karon for setting sunbeds and umbrellas on the sand there, Phuketwan has learned. The people were each fined 500 baht.

Yesterday, a fourth beach worker who attempted to place umbrellas and sunbeds on Ksron beach was arrested and fined 300 baht.

The strict treatment does not apply at neighboring Patong beach, where Phuketwan has been told that the mayor has asked police not to act against illegal beach workers.

Plans at some beaches to compromise by devoting 10 percent of the beaches to umbrellas appear to have not been successful

Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong has announced awards for Phuket's best and worst beaches that are to take place in three months, after Prince of Songklha University conducts a research project on Phuket's beaches and the changes that came with the military takeover of Thailand on May 22 last year.

The governor has also told councils to each set up a beach management team and to implement the 10 percent rule or keep sands entirely clear of commerce.

Phuketwan advocates the establishment of an independent Phuket Beach Authority, with the Royal Thai Navy enforcing regulations, removing the problem from the councils who are often obliged to act in support of local voters.

Well done to Kata and Karon. I see a massive improvement including motor bikes not been parked and driven on the footpaths as well as the general cleanliness and management of the beach. Not the same in Patong.

WHY?

Thanks, we've fixed it. It's Patong with more Aussie 'nongs' than usual.

Yesterday, I watched lifeguards selling the old mats given by banks after the tsunami, plus old umbrellas, for 200 baht, to tourists on Karon beach, same old-same old

Dear Mrs Mayor ...if it is illegal either get the regulations changed or let the police do what they are expected to do without fear or favour.

Ah good old patong next they'll be allowing tuktuks and their leaders to call the shots and jet skis to just do whatever they want and beach encroachment to return truly a dajavue moment and to think the beach was looking so beautiful like it used to do ah well

Thai vendors are now high-fiving each other as they are now free to not only get back to their illegal business, but to also make up for lost time. After all the NCPO efforts, Patong will be worse than ever.

What ever happened to the monthly water quality checks we were going to have? Did the tester die of sewage poisoning at Kata beach where the north side sewage goes in? It often stink around there?

Phuket is a island, international in the spotlights of tourists. It is unbelievable how every 'Beach' is undermining the orders/rules of the Central Government/NCPO and the Royal Navy in charge for that. Mayors & councils just do what they like to do, even when it is evident that they sabotage thai law enforcement, because they want to continue as it was the way prior 22 May 2014.

Paying beach was decent for a few weeks in early December. Now it has returned to the same old takeover of a public beach by the vendors who most likely are funded by monied interests. It is once again cluttered with matt's and umbRella support stakes everywhere. And the noisy, dangerous, jet ski vendors consume at least half the beach. LET THE NAVY TAKEOVER REGULATION AND ENFORCEMENT!

I really agree no sunbeds, umbrellas or any jetskie/paragliding on most of Phukets beaches. But find one and only ONE beach for activities as jetskie/paragliding so the workers in this activities at least have a job. Let 20 to n30o% of the beaches have sunbeds and umbreallas for eldery people. And let the people selling souveniers and sunglases allowed to go at only some beaches. Pleaqse let a lot of nice baeches be free of any sunbeds, umbrellas, beachsellers, boat and scooteractivities.

The jetski touts encourage tourists to hop on. If jetskis operated at one beach, the business would gradually disappear. Nobody wants to be that beach.

Today 9.2.Kamala, bad deck chairs now cost 400 baht for 2 people. Before there were good chairs for 200 baht!
