Update: Stricken FC Phuket Star Shows Sign of Life

Friday, November 5, 2010
UPDATE

Phuket Governor Tree Ackaradecha visited Camara Ahmed in Bangkok Hospital Phuket's cardiac care unit at 4pm on Friday.

Original Report

STRICKEN FC Phuket football star Camara Ahmed has opened his eyes for the first time since he collapsed during Saturday's Phuket City match.

The much-admired young man, who dreams of Phuket reaching Thailand's first division, still cannot move. Doctors are hoping a victory for FC Phuket in tomorrow's game may trigger more signs of life within Camara.

His eyes opened for the first time yesterday as nurses at Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket City adjusted his life support system in the cardiac care unit.

Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation President Paiboon Upatising, who is also president of FC Phuket and a leading Phuket businessman, said today he would personally meet the cost of Camara's treatment.

It will be no small amount - since Camara's admission to intensive care at the Phuket City hospital, costs of 499,550 baht have accrued. The 26-year-old player, who has a newborn child and a wife back in the Ivory Coast, will be transferred to Vachira Hospital, not far from Bangkok Hospital Phuket, tomorrow.

While Bangkok Hospital Phuket is rated highly for cardiac treatment, doctors say the condition of Camara's brain is now their prime concern. Wide experience treating brain-damaged motorcyclists has given Vachira doctors unparalelled expertise on Phuket.

An attempt may be made to stimulate Camara by relaying passages of play and scores during tomorrow night's big game in Bangkok.

A candlelight vigil was held by teammates and about 300 fans and admirers before the FC Phuket bus rolled for Bangkok on Wednesday evening.
