Gotcha - a Phuket hotel camera shows the ''stolen'' items in a bag

South African Tourist Held After Phuket Hotel's Camera Footage Spoils Insurance Scam

Sunday, June 7, 2015
PHUKET: Security camera footage at a resort helped to detect a Phuket tourist who was trying to commit an insurance scam, police have revealed.

Tourist Police worked with officers from Phuket City Police Station to bring in South African Laurie Viljoen Botha, 33, yesterday afternoon.

Mr Botha was accused of filing a false police report at the Phuket City station earlier in the day.

After being given the chance to view security camera footage from the Sino Imperial Hotel in Phuket Road, Mr Botha confessed and signed a three-page statement admitting his guilt.

He may face a jail term before being deported, investigators said.

''This is a warning to other tourists not to try insurance fraud,'' added one officer. ''Most perpetrators don't get away with it.''

Well caught. It is hard enough to get insurances to pay out at best of times for genuine reasons without scammers creating more suspicion.

Pity that I have very big connections in the SA insurance industries. This man has a life sentance, insuring that he nor his family will never again be awarded insurance of any kind. He is now lower class than a garden boy.

@Robin, in SA do you assess 'class' based upon someone's job? Is a garden boy a 'boy' because he's young or because he's black? Why is a gardener considered 'low' class? Just curious about the 'new' South Africa.

@ Robin,
What's it like being utterly without Sin - so you can cast stones?
