Room with a phew: Patong resort guests fled after smelling smoke

Resort Guests Flee 200,000 Baht Patong Blaze

Friday, October 1, 2010
AN ELECTRIC fault is being blamed for a fire that destroyed two rooms at a four star Phuket resort yesterday.

A guest in a ground-floor room by the pool at the Thara Phuket Beach Resort and Spa on beach road in Patong smelled smoke about 8.20am and discovered a blaze taking hold near the toilet. He and his wife packed and fled.

With resort staff alerted, guests in the room above also vacated their accommodation. Crews on three firetrucks from Patong took minutes to douse the blaze.

Damage was estimated at 200,000 baht. The 180-unit resort makes a point online of advertising non-smoking rooms.

Glad, no one was hurt and it sounds like the staff and fire crew where quick to respond, that could have been a lot worse.
