More celebrities are likely to choose Phuket with a private jetport

Private Jet Project on Phuket Set to Take Off

Friday, July 24, 2015
PHUKET: A 200 million baht project to develop a private jet terminal for wealthy visitors to Phuket is likely to be formally announced at any moment, Phuketwan has learned.

Space is being created for up to 30 private jets to be accommodated on a patch of land adjacent to Phuket International Airport, which is being expanded to a capacity of 12.5 million arrivals and departures annually.

Converting the 17-rai of turf for use by VIP celebrity passengers will enhance Phuket's appeal to the quality market exemplified by recent visitors Beyonce and the Kardashians.

The Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group has long held the ambition of moving into aviation and the exclusive Phuket private jet zone will provide that opportunity.

Although a formal announcement has yet to be made, subsidiary Siam Land Flying Co (SLF) has won approval from Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) to build and run the private jet terminal and provide support services to general aviation operators.

Medical emergency flights are also expected to be part of the facility's role.

When completed, the new jetport will be the second of in Thailand after the one at Bangkok's Don Muang airport, run by Mjets Ltd.

According to one recent newspaper report, in return for the right, AoT has accepted SLF's offer to invest in building the facility then transferring ownership to the state-controlled airport operator before being allowed to operate the facility over a 30-year period.

In addition to the "build-transfer-operate" scheme, SLF must also provide a profit-sharing deal based on gross revenue at a progressive rate payable on a monthly basis, senior AoT executives told the Bangkok Post.

SLF has already obtained a seven-rai plot adjacent to Phuket airport for the development of the terminal and fixed-base operator (FBO) facilities.

FBO refers to the rights granted by an airport authority to an entity to provide aeronautical services such as fuelling, hangaring, tie-down and parking, aircraft rental, aircraft maintenance and other services for corporate and private aircraft, says the Post.

SLF is negotiating for the purchase of 10 more adjacent rai to embark on full-scale development.

The company's ability to secure land is key to the project as the AoT has long maintained there is no nearby land available for a private jet terminal and FBO facilities. The AoT also insists there is no room within airport grounds to accommodate such facilities.

Endorsement is expected over the next two months, said senior AoT executives. The project cost is estimated at 200 million baht, with facilities operating in 18 months.

SLF has engaged in private aircraft charters and air ambulance services for 24 years.

CP patriarch Dhanin Chearavanont is reported to have a passion for flying. Khun Dhanin owns three jets - a Gulfstream 650, a Bombardier Global Express and a Dassault Falcon 2000.

It's simply amazing how fast these projects that will only benefit the top 1% of society get approved and built. Now when Beyonce and the Kardashians make their five minute visit every few years they can travel in VIP style.

Meanwhile the rest of us lower class peasants can continue to suffer the long queues, surly staff and over-charging taxi drivers at the current Phuket airport.

I'm also happy to see the ultra wealthy of Thailand have their priorities in order in how they invest their money. Forget about the water shortages, rubbish problems, the crumbling roads and infrastructure. As long as the rich and elite can fly in style who cares?

Phuket private jet zone will provide that opportunity.. to who?? Ah.. the answer in the last row: Khun Dhanin owns three jets... Another waste of money.. Phuket will be soon an immense smelling dump and nobody seems to care..

Phuket authorities, oh Phuket authorities! Is it not a first priority to have your Phuket Island a normal 21st century public transport ( like Singapore) for your own thai people and tourists? So many poor thai people on Phuket have nothing, just survive the month. And Phuket authorities, with dry eyes, ignore that? What is the thinking of the Phuket thai rich elite?

The most important part - and it was not expressly stated above - is whether that facility will have a runway - as that is the very bottleneck of the HKT.

I am not specialist in air transportation stuff - may the wording above implicitly means that that facility will have its own runaway.

But if not, I am afarid, except the very top of megacelebrities, private jets will get the lowest priority in HKT -as they do in BKK.
Once had to spend almost an extra hour on a runway to get permission to take-off- an extra hour to to a kind of preliminary permission for a specific time.
Similar situation with getting permission for landing - you can wait hours at departure airport at peak season to get permission to land in HKT at particular time -in order to be able to take off from the source airport, as commercial flights are prioritized.

I like the idea, only do they have landing slots available? Last year private jets were not allowed for some time? And now a parking for 30 of them?

@Dave. Open your front door and look at Phuket. It is already an immense smelling dump. Who cares..... nobody, only live for now, not for future. Pfffft!

Good idea on paper they really need to upgrade all infrastructure & solve the transport problem on the island first to get to this level this also assumes Phuket will be a long term flavor for the extremely wealthy but will this be the case, how much for a tuk tuk private airport to hotel the very wealthy don't tolerate slovenly service and over charging its amazing they can built a airport with all associated infrastructures in under 2 years yet transport drainage rubbish electrical supply not in 25 years the island must improve the infrastructures and services for such grand plans to be truly workable and viable for this class quality tourist.

These facilities will do nothing to address the main fault of Phuket airport.

A totally inefficient taxiway system feeding the single runway.

The 09/27 RWY is 3000m in length. However to use the last 500m of RWY 27 (Taxiway G) one has to backtrack along the runway and make an 180 degree turn.

All this takes a lot of time and during it no planes can land or take off.

A good example of an efficiently run single-runway (it has 2 but only 1 can be used simultaneously due to close proximity) is LGW or London-Gatwick.

They manage on average 700 aircraft movements (take-off and landings) per day.

HKT manages on average 208 per day (both figures from 2014 statistics).

Phuket does not achieve even a third of what LGW can do off a single runway so the problem is, as usual, in planning and efficiency.

AOT should invest money into extending the taxiway all the way to the end of RWY 27. This should be priority No 1 in increasing the efficiency.

Further down the line should be the extension of the current RWY beyond it's 3000m length and the addition of more high-speed exits.

I have never seen any Thai officials say even one word about these measures or problems, meaning an improvement is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Build all the terminals you want but unless you increase the efficiency of the single runway taxiway system, it will all amount to nothing.

You cannot hold 100L of water in a 50L bottle.

Editor Comment:

Do you really believe Phuket needs 700 aircraft movements a day, an increase of 500 on the 200 it now has, Herbert? I think 200 is more than enough. Balancing the island's future with its natural environment is far more important now. You may think 700 aircraft movements a day is progress. It would actually be a recipe for Phuket's destruction, and end the Andaman's appeal as a holiday destination.

No mention of the required Thai DCA approval process required? Just do it without it?
You are playing with fire at a time when Thailand aviation is under very close scrutiny.

@ Ed

As usual, you are reading way more into my comment than what was written.

My approached the issue purely from a technical point of view since the article and some posters paraded the new facilities. New terminal is also underway and expected to help the congestion.

None of these will do much unless the runway infrastructure is improved. The number of available slots and aircraft movement spacing will remain the same.

As to if Phuket needs more tourists ? Hell no !

If anything, I'd like to see the numbers drop to a third of what they have been in the past couple of years.

Judging by the FAA and ICAO audits there's a good chance we will see just that happen, along with a multitude of other factors that lessen the appeal of Phuket.

Some of which you even report about today here on PW (Taxis).
