Phuketwan on an attempted escape
A PRISONER who was taken to Vachira Hospital in Phuket City after complaining of stomach pains tried to hold a doctor hostage yesterday.
In a consulting room, the ''patient'' suddenly recovered his strength and grabbed the male doctor.
Two guards, who were in the room at the time, quickly brought the prisoner under control.
The Commander of Phuket Provincial Prison, Paisan Suwanraksa, said the prisoner was in jail for drug offences. He may have suffered psychological damage as a result of drug-taking.
Commander Paisan said it was the first incident of this kind in his six years in charge of the jail.
He added that there were currently 1100 inmates, 120 of those women, in a prison built to hold 700. The number has increased on March figures.
Commander Paisan said nearly 50 percent of inmates were there for drug offences.
The inmate with the stomach pains, a Thai, will not be charged over the incident.
