The case was reported to officers at Kathu Police Station in Patong yesterday by the girl's mother, a Thai woman.
She told police that her daughter was mentally disabled.
On June 29, her husband, a Laotian man, had confessed to raping the girl before vanishing.
Before leaving, he told her ''You can expect another member of the family soon.''
The couple, aged in their 40s, had come from the province of Surin to run a somtam stall in Patong. They have two children of their own.
When the woman heard what her husband had said, she checked with her daughter and the two went to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City, where doctors confirmed that the girl was five months pregnant.
The problem in Thailand and many other developing nations is that the society imposes no responsibility on the father of the child. Men get young girls pregnant and then just ditch them for another one.
This leaves a large number of young women in dire straits and the fact that abortion is illegal in most SE Asian nations only makes it worse.
Ask the NGOs who work with sex workers how many have such a background and you get an idea of the magnitude of the problem. Thailand also has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the region and one of the highest in the world.
Have you ever heard of a Thai or Filipino man paying alimony ?
I find it quite difficult to believe Thai society does not force men to take more responsibility and protect it's children. Thailand is a leading nation in Asia in regard to the number of women in positions of power within the administration but yet no effective measures have been undertaken.
I'm surprised that this case has been taken seriously by the police. I know of several almost identical cases where a stepfather sexually abuses his stepdaughters, some much younger than 15y and no action was taken by the police.
Only difference was that those men were Thais, this man is Laotian.
I just wonder how is it possible that a mother, living in the same household, did not notice anything for several months. There's probably more to the story than just what was told by the mother.
