Plenty of Beach Games as Phuket Gets Set

Thursday, April 14, 2011
WHILE Phuket lost the chance to bid for the 2020 World Expo, planning for the 2014 Asian Beach Games is proceeding, with Olympic officials vetting the Phuket venues between April 13-16.

Today committee members met at Royal Phuket City Hotel, outlining the planning so far. A budget of 430 million baht is being sought to stage 17 sports, mostly at Patong and Karon.

Officials said they were satisfied with what they had been shown of the earthquake and tsunami warning systems, but then only a novelist would dream of a natural disaster interrupting a sporting event of such magnitude.

The first Asian Beach Games were held in Bali in 2008 and Muscat hosted the 2010 version, with Haiyang, China, up next in 2012. The Games have the backing of the Olympic movement.

Beach games appear to have suddenly become the ''in'' thing for some of the world's sunnier destinations. Jamaica is due to hold the World Beach Games from July 16-August 11 and the so-called International Beach Games are scheduled for the Maldives in September, with 92 countries said to be participating.

A lot of sand still has to pass through the hourglass before Phuket gets its turn.

I am sure the officials will be impressed with the pleasant staff running affordable, comfortable transportation we know and love so much. The good old tuk tuks. NOT!

I wonder how impressed they were with the Karon beach road. Give it a couple more weeks and we'll need a 4x4 vehicle to pass it southbound.
