Tourists' Restaurant Rip-off; Brit Dead in Pool; Graveyard at Sea Fears; Phuket's Dirty Secret

Sunday, May 17, 2015
UPDATING All Day, Every Day A British woman was found dead in a hotel swimming pool on Koh Chang on Sunday. Rachel Ann Turner, 43, was found lying face down in a two-metre deep section of the pool floor by a hotel staff member at 6am. Myanmar correspondent Jonah Fisher went to Ohn Taw Gyi camp in Rakhine State where everyone seems to have direct experience of the traffickers. China and the United States budged not a bit Saturday over Beijing's assertive development in disputed parts of the South China Sea, with Foreign Minister Wang Ji politely but pointedly dismissing Washington's push for a diplomatic solution to ease tensions. A photo of a receipt from a Thai restaurant posted on social media has quickly gone viral as the charge of 8,840 baht appeared excessively high, including 17 percent value-added tax and a "mandatory" 800 baht tip.

Thailand has called on international organisations to raise the Rohingya migrant issue with Myanmar (Burma) after Nay Pyi Taw signalled it may snub a regional meeting on May 29. Thailand will guide away boats with migrants on board found outside Thai waters or accept migrants after their boats enter Thai waters and repatriate them later, while sick boat people will be treated by medical personnel, the Internal Security Operations Command announced.

Phuket World of People We definitely do understand why Scandinavians are cancelling their holidays in Krabi. But Phuket too is getting filthier every year. We stay in Kata most of the time but this year we were struck by the immense filthiness of the wastewater canal that runs from Club Med to the north end of the beach where the water runs into the sea. Please clean up this mess or no tourist will ever come back. The initial investment destinations for hotel and resort investors tend to cover the main Bangkok, Phuket and Samui markets, followed by Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Khao Lak (Phangnga) and Krabi as secondary markets which are also attracting some investor interest. More civil servants facing investigation for corruption and fraud are likely to be suspended from work in the coming week. Their names will be submitted to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, said a source at the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission. Earlier, Prayut used his powers under Article 44 to suspend 45 civil servants being investigated for corruption. Their respective ministries have been told to complete their investigations as quickly as possible and if found guilty those civil servants must be punished.

AP Gunmen shot dead three Egyptian judges in the strife-torn Sinai Peninsula, where security forces are battling an Islamist insurgency spearheaded by an affiliate of the Islamic State group, police said. Around the Region ''The Rohingya are faced with two options: stay and face annihilation, or flee,'' said Professor Penny Green, part of a group that recently completed several months research in the Rohingya's home state of Rakhine. ''If we understand genocide to be a process, that is what this is.'' Living death is what the Rohingya have been trying to flee for years.
