Generations pass on traditions during Phuket's Vegetarian Festival

Phuket's Veggie Fest Photo Special

Sunday, September 25, 2011
PHUKET: Phuket City is ready. Hundreds of yellow flags are flying, cleaners are on the beach where the invading spirits will emerge from the sea, and the vegetarian food stalls are already attracting hungry customers.

From Tuesday - or rather, Monday night when Phuket gains its Saphan Hin light and sound show - the days of Phuket's unique festival of purity begin.

Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana has her own light and sound show happening. She has announced the suspension of the laying of underground power cables in Phuket Town until the festival is over.

Some Phuket Town residents, it seems, have questioned why the work needs to happen at all.

In Phase II of the 39 million baht project, lines are to go underground in Dibuk Road, Yaowarat Road, Krabi Road and Phuket Road.

By the time this year's Vegetarian Festival is over, the residents should have a better understanding of why Phuket's powerlines are going underground.

Work will resume in Krabi Road on October 7 and it's scheduled to be completed by December.

While you do a much better job than the Gazette covering the news we still seriously lack a newspaper that will tell us when and where things happen around the island. Current case in point is the veggie festival having someone put out a detail map of were things are happening and a time line as to when is seriously needed and not just this even but the many events that go on throughout the year. I find event after event you must have serious local knowledge to know when and were something is going on even when you ask the locals they haven't a clue.
