Update: At noon on Monday, Floyd's face was still in place. By 7pm, it had disappeared. So long, Keith! What could possibly replace you?
WHAT have they done to Keith Floyd? For years, the image of the celebrity television chef has adorned the airport road t-intersection.
The smiling bon vivant has gazed down at new arrivals and residents from what seemed like a very large billboard, welcoming everybody to the island.
If the lights happened to change to red as you approached, it was impossible to miss the giant Floyd, staring down, promoting his restaurant Floyd's Brasserie at the Burasari Resort in Patong.
Sandwiched between other billboards advertising the island's two shopping malls, Jungceylon and Central Festival, the huge Floyd image took on an almost iconic perspective.
For many he was the first recognizable friendly face they saw as they started their holiday.
But on Friday, Floyd had disappeared, except for his face. And behind him loomed an even bigger, more dominating billboard frame that dwarfs the celebrity chef, Jungceylon and Central Festival.
High on the framework, looking like ants from the ground, workers were welding the gigantic green structure into place.
What is going on? Is it goodbye Floyd, or will he emerge again from the blank vanishing space, his usual dapper self?
And what could possibly go on the really big billboard, large than life, Jungceylon and Central Festival?
Only time will tell. Phuketwan called the telephone number on the billboard, seeking an explanation, but the call was not returned.
Keith, where have you gone?
