PHUKET: Phuket's iconic Soi Dog Foundation is pleased to announce the completion of the purchase of the remaining seven rai of land in Mai Khao on which the Soi Dog shelter and hospitals stand.
Soi Dog now owns the entire plot measuring approximately 12 rai. The first section was purchased in October 2009. As reported earlier this year, there was a danger of Soi Dog leaving Phuket and relocating elsewhere if funds could not be raised to secure the remaining land by the end of October.
Soi Dog Vice President John Dalley said: ''We are delighted to be able to maintain our headquarters here on Phuket and finish the job started here nearly eight years ago. Many thanks to our supporters across the world who have raised the necessary funds.''
We would particularly like to express our thanks to the donor from Germany who doubled up on the final two million baths worth of donations and his Thai PA Khun A for conducting the negotiations with the former land owner.
Many thanks also to Sam Fauna and his staff at the International Law office for donating all the legal work entailed yet again.
Soi Dog can now plan far more effectively, both for operations in Phuket and elsewhere. Soi Dogis currently in talks with other groups throughout Thailand with a view to offering both practical and financial support.
On recent visits to Bangkok whereSoi Dog was involved in talks with the speaker of the Thai Parliament and other Government officials over the introduction of an animal welfare law, we were inundated with requests to assist in the capital.
Dog Meat Trade
On September 4 over 1000 supporters demonstrated in Bangkok against the dog meat trade, as part of an ongoing campaign to end the illegal trade.
One of the most badly injured survivors from the recent seizures of almost 2000 in NakhomPhanom Province is currently at the Soi Dog shelter, and will soon fly to Soi Dog USA and a new home there.
Mr. Dalley stated: ''This is not an issue of whether it is right or wrong to eat dog meat. These dogs are not farmed animals; many are stolen pets from all over Thailand.
''The dogs are stuffed alive into small cages, usually around 500 dogs per truck. Many suffocate to death and in reality these are the lucky ones. It is erroneously believed that the adrenalin produced through causing pain tenderises the meat, and it is common to break the dogs' legs and hang them before skinning alive.''
Soi Dog is now a registered foundation in six countries and was recently described as one of the world's most progressive and fastest growing charities.

I thought Soi Dog was between Soi Crocodile and Soi Eric, where the less attractive ladies hang out.
