Phuket's Soi Dog Group Declares Cash Crisis

Phuket's Soi Dog Group Declares Cash Crisis

Monday, May 2, 2011
PHUKET'S iconic Soi Dog Foundation [Soi Dog] is facing possible closure or expensive and disruptive relocation of its northern Phuket shelter to 250 dogs unless it raises five million baht by October this year.

Soi Dog Director John Dalley said the future of Soi Dog Foundation [http://www.soidog.org] is in ''serious trouble'' if the shelter in Mai Khao is not paid for by October. Much of its critical care facilities are located there.

Soi Dog purchased half the land on which the shelter is located in 2009 but must purchase the other half by October or face a serious situation.

Mr. Dalley said Soi Dog had to make a choice between using general funds to secure the shelter, or prevent the ''tragic deaths of countless animals through our mass vaccination program,'' caused by an outbreak of distemper which enormously increased operating costs over the last six months.

Faced with that stark choice, Mr Dalley said: ''We made the choice to help the animals.''

While this work continues, Soi Dog still has to raise the necessary funds for the shelter land. The land owner has already has been approached by two commercial organisations to purchase the land.

Soi Dog has raised half of the10 million baht required, but is now in a desperate race to acquire the remaining five million baht through donations.

A Sunday brunch fund raising event will be held at Evason Phuket and Bon Island on May 22 between Noon-4pm to help with fund raising. The 2000 baht a head cost includes a fabulous buffet, free flow drinks and some outstanding entertainment that will surprise everyone with its spectacular displays.

A raffle and auction will be held and all proceeds will go to Soi Dog.

Said John Dalley: ''Such tremendous support for Soi Dog from people living on Phuket is very much appreciated. It is no exaggeration to say that we are in a race against time to raise the necessary funds, so any support, whether by attending this event and contributing financially, or by joining our group of generous donators from Phuket and around the world, we very much need these funds.''

Soi Dog current employs four fulltime vets and 15 other staff members, including dog catchers and shelter personnel, almost all of them from Phuket. Management continues to be carried out by volunteers at their own expense both on Phuket and around the world, ensuring all funds go directly to helping the animals.

Sterilisations are now over 32,000 [dogs and cats] on Phuket and neighboring provinces. Many dogs at the shelter receive treatment for wounds and injuries Soi Dog only keeps and re-homes dogs that have been subject to cruelty and abuse and therefore cannot be returned to the same situation.

Look I am sorry for these animals but I believe money can be spent better on the children and old folks of Thailand.

Ever notice that the people that will take a cheap shot at a reputable, hardworking and honorable charity with a comment about using the money for the elderly or children are usually those least likely to actually give money for the benefit of the elderly and the children?
I give generously to social service charities, and I also give generously to wildlife and animal charities. The volunteers and employees of soi dog are active contributors to their community. They are also good parents, sons and daughters too. I won't launch into a discourse on compassion and the obligation of humans to show compassion to animals as it would be a wasted effort on those that do not understand. Instead, as a health professional I will stress the public health benefits of having an organization such as soi dog respond to the failure of humans to act responsibly in spaying and neutering domestic animals. The cats and dogs one sees on the streets did not magically appear over night. They are there because of abandonment, neglect and irresponsible human behavior that allows these animals to breed and then sees the animals cast out once the puppies and kittens are no longer cute.
I will be donating to soi dog with the satisfaction of knowing I am doing both a good deed and making the neighborhoood I stay in a more pleasant place to be.

Stray pet animals (Dogs, cats, etc...) are real pests for home neighbors.

As said Anonymous and confirmed by Scunner, Phuket residents and Phuket Officials have other duties to fulfill before helping those NGO Associations.

As they are pests they should be eradicated the sooner the better before someone get rabies or bitten.

A much greater concern on Phuket, Whistle-Blower, is stray people, especially the biters.

Tourist Police in Phuket town has a shelter for them....free of charge.

If they can't maintain their operations then why don't they consider merging with PAWS (Phuket Animal Welfare Society)?

They both have the same aims and objectives to relieve animal suffering so it seems inefficient for them to raise and spend their funds separately for the same purpose.

Perhaps donations for freight up north, BBQ I'm thinking !

If only the solution for the stray people (The Biters) was as simple as the solution for stray animals.

The Soi Dog foundation do good work here in the community in my opinion. I echo the thoughts of Rob, why don't they team up with PAWS? I will make sure i drop some Baht into the soi dog collection box next time i pass one.

While I think Soi Dog has performed admirably and contributed much, a question I have is why a foreign-chaired animal charity shelter is buying prime land near a beach?

Whistle-blower, you need your head checked. There isn't any Rabies in Phuket, thanks to people like Soi Dog.

Rob, PAWS is a MUCH smaller operation, who do not conduct rescues, unlike Soi Dog who rescue unquestioningly and continuously.

I would like to see people who comment here actually getting into the real situation and understanding it instead of making comments from far-off sidelines.

Well perhaps Soi Dogs needs to rethink the size and scope of its operations.

Nobody is questioning their intentions but if they are in the middle of a cash crisis and cannot cover their costs then this raises questions about sustainability.

If their operations are not sustainable then it will defeat the whole point.

Maybe Soi Dogs needs to become a much smaller, but more sustainable, organisation then work their way up to a larger scale operation.

Didn't all these animal welfare groups work together at some point?

It could be so much more efficient if they did.

If Soi Dog closed its operations and opened new doors for helping people, I'm sure they'd find some additional cash flow. I'm also sure Phuket would be better off for it.

Also, I'd gladly pay a bit more in tax to pay for a dog catcher and some small doses of potassium chloride.

That may sound harsh but let's face it, they're dogs and money can be better spent on helping people.

If you read the information above you would see that the donations that would have bought the land was diverted to fighting a Distemper outbreak on the island, which would affect birth stray and owned animals, In most first world countries this would be done by the government agency responsible for animal welfare and not an NGO, however in Phuket there is no one else to do it than SDF, they have prevented a mass deaths of both stray and owned dogs, so by treating the animals and preventing suffering rather than buy land to get their shelter, it just shows that they really care about the animals and that comes first which i think is great, Wblower you're a bit of a twat, you are clearly a farang living in a country and culture you don't understand, if you don't like Thailand and its ways, and you don't have any positive advice other than kill everything you don't like or is an inconvenience to you, then bugger off back to where you came from.

Irritated stupid people love to write stupid comment without knowing who are the people behind a pen-name.
I am farang with over 32 years in Phuket, married with Thai wife and 3 Thai children and 1 Thai grandchildren.
I am in perfect harmony with Thai people either Thai, Muslim or Moken as I can speak their language well.
If Soi Dog Foundation [Soi Dog) does not get any support from Phuket people (Thais and foreigners), that mean something is wrong in the project with poor planning.
Also we saw it already with the after-tsunami, a lot of foreigners were setting up associations to help the disaster victims but in fact were getting fat their own saving accounts.
Soi Dog Foundation [Soi Dog) may sell its land and rent another piece of land in cheap area by example.

Amusing that whenever stories regarding dogs appear it seems to bring the cockroaches out of the woodwork. As one responder points out; these people who say give it to the old and kids and kill the dogs etc., actually inevitably give to nothing and have no understanding of the society they are living in. There are many excellent charities on the island helping the human population. Soi Dog are actually helping people as well. Imagine the state of the island if they weren't here. Probably same as Bali or Bangkok with half a million dogs, rabies problem etc.. People should get their facts straight. PAWS operate a commercial clinic and do very little for stray dogs, and certainly do not actively pick up dogs like Soi Dog. Have seen the shelter and is excellent and not on beach front land!

"If you read the information above you would see that the donations that would have bought the land was diverted to fighting a Distemper outbreak" - can we see receipts and expense accounts for this money?

Kelly,
I did not say Beach front, but near the beach. " Prime land near the beach." Why is a foreign chaired charity is situated on some of the most expensive real estate in the nation is my point. And it moved there not too long ago. I'm all for giving money to help animals, but not contributing to land speculative activities.

Where can we see the books on the charity? Salaries, expenses etc? This is absolutely necessary before anyone sends money and will encourage more donations if provided soundly. Can we get a response from the charity as I am sure you are reading this?
