Phuket's deep sea port can only handle one cruise ship at a time

Port Turnoff for Big Spending Cruise Guests

Saturday, July 14, 2012
PHUKET: A group of senior executives from cruise lines say conditions at Phuket's deep sea port need to be improved in a hurry after constant complaints from passengers have gone unheard.

The executives - mostly from Royal Caribbean but also representing the Princess line - complained that Phuket Immigration and Phuket Marine Office 5 staff knew about the problems but no action had been taken to fix them.

Consultant and spokesperson Dr Choedchai Khannabha told Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha that sometimes just 10 Immigration officers would be sent to deal with as many as 6000 passengers on a cruise ship.

The passengers had as little as 12 hours to see Phuket and it was important for a good impression to be created.

Taxis at the deep sea port were also not to international standards, and there was a lack of signage informing the quality tourists on the ships about taxi fares and what to do on Phuket.

With Dr Choedchai at the meeting were James Ngui, Royal Caribbean product and port operations manager, Colin J Clarke, hotel director, Rick Welch, worldwide operations manager, and Jianfeng Tong, head of port operations, Asia.

The cruise companies hope to have 60 visits a year to Phuket, with passengers staying up to two days, and cruise travellers are just the kind of tourists Phuket needs.

The national government is believed to be fast-tracking plans to expand the Phuket deep sea port at Cape Panwa on the east coast so it can handle more cruise liners after years of neglect.

Singapore now has an ultra-modern cruise liner terminal. Phuket will not gain from the increasing interest in the region unless its port facilities are quickly raised to match the extra demand and Singapore's international standards.

Governor Tri said he would take up the issue and recommended that cruise executives detail in writing their complaints and what needs to be upgraded at the port.

This could be Phuket's motto:-

(insert any gov dept here)"staff knew about the problems but no action had been taken to fix them".

I just don't see how they will ever get past the Taxi fare and on shore rip offs. I remember reading water selling for 100 baht. A Crazy rip off to tourists. I hope they get a bus stop there with the Pink Buses linking them to Phuket City and beyond.

I dont think the well-heeled who pay upwards of $1,000.00 per person per cruise, wants to be seated in a hot tuk tuk or local pink buss to see Phuket. No sirs, they want a little bit more luxury and they are willing to pay for it too, but alas, they just get ripped off. Long way to go before you measure up to Singapore's new terminal, that is world class.

TAT just announced they want to significantly increase the number of quality tourists (spending Bt 6000 per day or more) and cruise passengers are precisely that.

I think TAT bigwigs should head to Phuket Marine office 5 for a serious talk.

Phuket only looks cheap.

To compare it to Singapore is also a little bit unfair to Singapore. It is like comparing Ronaldo to a guy with a Ronaldo t-shirt.

I have visited Phuket several times with the same cruise company and have kept them informed about all the taxi blockades, assaults, fares etc. For the past 2 years they have by-passed Phuket. Nufsaid.

The Port is Managed by a Private Company therfore it is up to them to provide the infrastructure development. We have been telling them for eight years now and even offered to JV a USD $200 Million Investment. But the usual problems for foreign Investment in Thailand have blocked this.

In agreement with Lena, Phuket not only looks cheap, it looks downright tatty, despite repeated promises to clean it up. I am referring to the billboards & lack of scenery, not the scams & rip-offs of this occasion. If a deep water port was available further up the coast, Phuket could kiss goodbye to this lucrative passing trade. Remember, Myanmar is less than 300 miles up the coast, less than 1/2 a days sail for a fast passenger liner. Myanmar will now open up very quickly & develop with foreign investment. Phuket be warned!
