Phuket tourism figures do not look as healthy on closer examination

Phuket's Passenger Figures Grow Ugly Up Close

Saturday, June 5, 2010
PHUKET air passenger numbers reflect a curious dilemma, a problem so strange that the English language really can't cope. We are going to have to run the gamut of claims of sexism to explain this . . . but it's important to understand the point.

The Japanese language, so we have learned, includes a word for a woman who looks great from behind, but proves on closer inspection to be unattractive. Phuket's tourism is just like that.

At first glance, the figures are beautiful: overseas passengers through Phuket International Airport rising 66.52 percent in May, compensating for a 5.83 percent dip in domestic traffic, and providing a total of 426,423 arrivals and departures, up 18.06 percent overall.

But looked at more closely, that great first impression is not so good.

The key is that last May was truly horrendous in the wake of the red invasion of the Asean conference in Pattaya and trouble in Bangkok. Figures for May last year dropped by 14.48 percent on the previous year.

So this year's increase really only takes Phuket back to fractionally above where it was in May 2008.

Meanwhile, of course, the number of rooms available on Phuket and around the Andaman has increased considerably. So, although the long-term prospects remain appealing, more people in the industry are suffering.

While most figures for May 2010 are up on last year, only extreme optimists and the Tourism Authority of Thailand perhaps would try to project it as some kind of evidence that Phuket and the industry is in great shape.

In fact, the resort occupancy figures that Phuketwan hears lately are much lower than official figures being quoted more broadly in the media.

And this month, June? Our industry contacts are telling us that June is going to be awful.

Scary television coverage of the Bangkok confrontation and those travel alerts that unfairly included Phuket will continue to needlessly damage tourism in Phuket and around the Andaman, as well as Thailand as a whole.

Some sensible travellers from Queensland are flying to watch the World Cup from June 11 on Phuket in a much better time zone, and at a fraction of the price of a fare to South Africa, however most of their fellow Aussies - and just about the whole of Europe - will stay at home to watch the best teams in the world in action.

June has been a dismal months for the past two years, and this year there will be no kickbacks for Phuket from the World Cup. With the crackdown on illegal football gambling, we can't add ''You can bet on it'' because that would be inciting readers to break the law.

Perhaps there's a Japanese word for that, too.

On the positive side of the ledger, expat arrivals via Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport have increased to between 17,000 and 18,000 over the past two days from a low of 12,000 to 13,000 between May 19-21, the Bangkok Post reports today.

TAT Governor Surapol Svetasreni has said his organisation is planning special events during the low season to attract overseas visitors.

In Germany there is also the saying: "Von hinten lockt'se, von vorne schockt'se." Translated in poor English: Tempting the back, shocking the front.

What crap is that!
The hotels had never been cheaper then now! Is that because there is so many tourists??

People are staying away and there is only coming more from China and they do not spend any money! Phuket had been digging its own grave for years, soon is it big enough!

TAT in the UK also has a meaning.
It means Rubbish.

In your article you forgot to mention that for the Euro zone tourist, Thailand is now about 20 percent more expensive compare to just 5 or 6 months ago.

For instance, last December with 100 Euro you could get roughly 4,600 Thb, today only 3,800 and keep going down, this difference will certainly going to affect the shopping and the amusement business more then the presences since the air ticket fares are still quite cheap as well then the hotel room, but probably only because we are now in low season.

We will see what the consequences will going to be the next high season if the trend will remain like this considering that Thailand and Phuket in particular is always been one of the favorite holidays destinations for the Europeans, especially for the value for money factor.

As the Euro is becoming more and more a weakling (the 1 euro = 1 $ not far away and not unlikely, even lower...), western guest hotels/groups should think about some special packages for their regular guests from Euroland. Do not let them go someplace else, because the Euro - or the then successor currencies - will rise again in one or latest two seasons to come.

Part of Euroland is doing now the Chinese way of growth, by cheap currency and export growth. Watch out for Germany, Finland, France, Benelux, Austria and Slovenia to rise as phoenixes. Do better not lose your regulars from that countries. For the others, I would not do a lot of special things...

Large tour-operators from Europe are setting up their winter brochures and price-lists and all ask us to give better prices as Euro has been devalued by more than 20 percent for six months, and the saga is not over.

So if we keep the prices in Thai Baht, we will be too expensive and Europeans will go to alternative destinations where they will get better deals in Eurozone.

As Thai export has risen by 40 percent since the beginning of the year and represent 60% of GDP, tourism industry with less than 10% of GDP will not bend the Thai Administration to devalue the Thai Baht.

A higher baht is hurting exports also. But with the big increase in export (thanks to great business in Asia) it is unreasonable to weaken the baht, would look like street robbery on state level - or like the Chinese way.

-THB 20% more expensive than before
-Lack of flights to Thailand at reasonable prices, even at low season
-Price dumping in Eurozone, bargains can be found in Greece, Spain, Italy

Not much TAT can do about this...
