Phuket Senator Wichai in waiting: appointment confirmation likely next week

Phuket's Ex-Governor to Return as a Senator

Tuesday, April 12, 2011
FORMER Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob is to become a senator appointed to represent Phuket, his wife Thaisika confirmed today to Phuketwan.

The former Phuket governor, noted for his keenness to give Phuket a better roads infrastructure and his desire to improve the balance with nature, is one of 73 selected senators announced today.

Governor Wichai retired in 2010 having been governor of Phuket during a short but turbulent period, with an extension granted beyond the age of 60. He created a special governor's committee to approve all new building projects on Phuket after a period when environmental permissions were easy to obtain.

His term as Phuket's senior administrator was marked by a successful Asean summit on Phuket involving US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the creation of a unique Phuket palmyra gateway along Phuket's main highway, a world's first jet-ski insurance scheme designed to tame scamsters, and the introduction of regular three-monthly meetings with Phuket's honorary consuls.

Former Governor Wichai was one of three nominees for the post. The successful nominees will take their seats in the Senate once their names have been announced in the Government Gazette.

The former Phuket governor will replace Phummisak Hongsyok, a highly-regarded senator who has been fighting chronic illness.

Governor Wichai was replaced late last year by the present Governor, Tri Augkaradacha, who had been a Phuket vice governor for several years.

It's great to have news that positive in the sense that it's also truly interesting! Why is this accomplished man choosing to further his career here in Phuket; what does he think he saw here that makes him believe that he can bring more of the positive stuff that he became known for; whom are his friends now that he's formally out of the Interior Ministry bureaucracy. Does he get to live here? Do he and Gov Tri have a room for him in that crumbling building? Maybe he'd like a nice place on San Sabai? Welcome back Mr and Mrs Wichai!
