Phuket's Five-Day Break, With an Alcohol Ban

Friday, May 13, 2011
PHUKET and Thailand have begun another five-day national public holiday period that will conclude on Tuesday with a ban on the sale of alcohol.

Tuesday marks Visakha Buja Day, perhaps the holiest day in the Buddhist calendar. Today is the Royal Ploughing Day holiday.

Cabinet decided to also make Monday a public holiday, knowing that inevitably many people would take the day off anyway.

What the five-day holiday now represents is a practical boost for domestic tourism, with thousands expected to take the opportunity to return to their homes in other parts of Thailand or to enjoy the extend break at a holiday destination.

From 11.59pm on Monday, though, bars clubs and restaurants are expected to stop selling alcohol as a mark of respect for the holy Buddhist day.

Most bars and restuarants in Patong usually obey the annual request to close, said Patong Entertainment Association president Weerawit Kruetrakul today.

''It's true to say there are a few places that forget to close and they usually have to be shut by the police,'' he said today.

As a social drinker and a person that likes a drink with my dinner, particularly when on holiday, I really think this law should be relaxed for the tourism sector.

I seem to be fantastically unlucky in that the last few times I have had stopovers in Thailand that it was one of these special days and the only place I could find a drink was in my hotel minibar.

No fun at all.

Seems like poor planning on someones part that the kids have only just gone back to school. My son has had four and a half days of schooling at Kajonkiet Suksa, after the two month holiday, and already he gets a four day long week-end.

Makes me wonder what I'm paying for.

No joke.

If you look at other countries in the region who are competing for tourists you will find they have no such restrictions or will make exceptions for tourists.

Rob, i truely feel for you..imagine not being able to have your drink with your dinner...how on earth are you going to cope?? Mate it's ONE day..the the holiest day of the Buddhist year!!! I know people who live here who struggle even to eat some days, let alone have their wee drinksees, and they don't complain about it!!!

No fun at all huh?? Next holiday i suggest you try UAE or similar...no drinkees at all...Ask them to relax the law for you..hahahaha,,,come on, this is a wind up from you ..please??

No one could be this serious about not having their dinner drink for ONE night.

No it is not one day per year, it is several days plus there are dry days for election days as well.

Last time I was affected by this I had gone out for a special meal with a loved one since I was only in the country for one night and was very disappointed that I was unable to order wine with our food at the expensive restaurant we had gone to as a treat.

It's small things like this that make higher end tourists look elsewhere for future visits.

(not to mention the riots, demonstrations, airport closures, terrorist bombings, coups, border wars with neighboring countries etc.)
