DENGUE fever poses more danger to Phuket people this monsoon season because Phuket mosquitoes have developed an immunity to sprays, a Phuket Public Health expert warned today.
Deputy Phuket Director Dr Wirawat Keytamoch told Phuketwan that Phuket people would be better off taking preventative measures than relying on regular council spraying.
''There's really not much point in calling the council (tessaban) if you have a mosquito problem on Phuket,'' he said. ''Mosquitoes are adapting and becoming immune to spraying.''
Dr Wirawat said preventative measures were the answer - especially making sure there were no small pools of water anywhere on Phuket where dengue carriers could breed.
Fish could also be introduced in ponds to prevent mosquitoes breeding. A Public Health campaign is about to begin, with information being spread through schools and temples.
The dengue season is beginning throughout the region. Nations like Singapore, where awareness campaigns have given citizens knowledge about preventing dengue, are best-prepared to stave off the illness.
Dengue can be extremely painful and debilitating, with victims usually requiring hospital care for several days. Even more dangerous is a second dose, when deaths sometimes occur.
