Anchalee Thepabutr enjoys meeting a Democrat supporter today

Phuket's Democrat Pair Take Poll Spotlight

Wednesday, May 25, 2011
PHUKET: IT WAS the turn of incumbent Phuket MP Raewat Areerob and well-know Phuket figure Anchalee Thepabutr to nominate today as candidates for the national elections on July 3.

The pair attracted a large number of supporters to Provincial Hall in Phuket City, where Phuket Election Commission officials are based during the nomination period.

While the Democrats view Phuket as a stronghold, much has changed since the last election when Khun Anchalee's husband Tossaporn and Khun Raewat were the winners.

This time around, Khun Tossaporn has stepped aside and his wife hopes to replace him.

Nationally, the main opposition for the Democrats will come from the Pheu Thai party, led by Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

While the two parties basically represent the two sides of Thai politics, there are different shades of red and of yellow.

So far five candidates - two from Pheu Thai, two Democrats and one candidate of the Bhumjaithai Party - have nominated.

More are expected to come forward on Thursday to stand as independents or with the backing of less well-known parties.

With just over five weeks to go to polling day, caretaker Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is due to attend a rally at Phuket City's Saphan Hin public park from 6pm on Friday.

He will probably then concentrate on visiting fine-line provinces where the vote is expected to be closer and therefore more critical to the result of the election.

And will this be a pro-democrat mouthpiece or will it equally promote both sides of the election, and not only the airport terrorists.

We will do what we always do, and report all sides with fairness and balance. And unlike some readers, we don't live in the past. I suggest you move into the present, Jimmy. By the way, as the story makes plain, while the Democrats remain of the yellow side of politics, there were - and are - many shades of yellow. The people who invaded the airports were not Democrats, nor were they terrorists. Try to be fair and balanced, Jimmy.

You are aware that many of the democrats invaded the airport? In fact, the current foreign minister was there on many occasions and referred to it as "a lot of fun".

Editor Comment:

As someone who was stranded overseas by the airport invasion, I'm well aware of what happened. We also reported the Phuket seizure - from the airport. Both sides of Thai politics have a lot to live down. Fortunately, voters tend to focus on the future, not the past. So should this election's onlookers.
