Sungworn To-Udta shows a couple of his lighters at Phuket City station

Phuket's Car 'Torch' Nabbed at Supermarket

Friday, December 3, 2010
A HOMELESS man who smiles a lot has confessed to being Phuket's car ''torch'' - the arsonist with a chip on his shoulder who set fire to at least five expensive vehicles parked in Phuket City streets.

Police arrested 37-year-old Sungworn To-Udta as he wandered around Tesco-Lotus supermarket in Phuket City.

He was recognised from security camera footage taken of a man leaving the scene of the last car burn on November 10 in Phang Nga Road.

In one night, four expensive cars were set on fire by Khun Sungworn. He said he would usually light the fires after drinking cheap Thai whisky.

A media presentation at Phuket City Police Station today was told that Khun Sungworn came from Phang Nga, where he had a wife and a young child, but had moved to Phuket several years ago.

Khun Sungworn's method of torching the vehicles involved placing a motorcycle inner tube under the left-hand front side of the vehicles.

Police found three lighters among his scant possessions and a pair of pants just like the ones on the security camera footage.

And what would that prove, Antz Pantz? That violence solves everything?

At least someone is resisting the greedy, selfish capitalists that are ruining our shared planet and societies for their monetary gains.

Is torching cars carbon-neutral? Perhaps stealing them, driving them off piers and converting them into instant artificial reefs might be more environmentally-friendly. Even better if the batteries are removed first, eh?
