Highway Patrol and Transport officers stop taxis for checks

Phuket New Year Toll Shock as Expat, Thai Die on Motorcycles

Friday, December 30, 2011
PHUKET: Two men - one a Polish expat - have died within hours of Phuket's New Year ''Seven Days of Danger'' road safety campaign beginning.

The Polish man, aged 37, died instantly when he came off his motorcycle while taking a notorious curve in central Phuket's Wichitsongkram Road about 3.50am today. Police attribute the crash to speed.

Adirek Tongdee, 30, died later after a separate motorcycle mishap when he crashed into the back of a parked truck in the bypass road, near Tesco Lotus supermarket, at 10pm last night. He died this morning in Vachira Phuket Hospital at 6.50am today.

Police believe the crash can be attributed to the rider having too much to drink.

Phuketwan has been provided with the name of the Polish man but is withholding publication until after his family have been informed.

The 2010-2011 ''Seven Days of Danger'' campaign recorded just four deaths between December 29 and January 4, but the 2011-2012 campaign has not started well.

Authorities are putting more police and volunteers on Phuket's roads than ever before, with 55 checkpoints across Phuket for New Year's Eve celebrations on Saturday night.

Three foreigners - one German woman and two Russians, a man and a woman - were among 16 people who needed treatment in hospital following crashes yesterday on Phuket.

Highway Patrol police and Transport department officials have also been cooperating to stop and fine speedsters and illegal taxi drivers at a checkpoint in Thepkasattri Road, close to the airport road t-intersection.

When they carry out these 'checks' on taxis, I would like to see them check if 'Meter Taxis' with passengers inside, have the meter on. Every time I land at Phuket Airport I have go into negotiations to get the meter turned on in the cab.

I see people turn around-often in a dangerous manner to avoid these checkpoints. Next to useless unless hassling lower income helmetless motorcycle riders is your goal. Until speed limits are enforced, the carnage will continue.

Sandy, how exactly do you negotiate that? You must be extremely skilled. Are you a diplomat, perhaps? In over 7 years I have never been able to persuade a Phuket meter taxi to turn on the meter!
