Phuket's Surin beach as it will be on December 30-31 in party mode

Phuket NY Beach Party 'All Approved'

Thursday, December 13, 2012
PHUKET: A controversial two-day New Year music festival at Phuket's Surin beach is proceeding - with the approval of Phuket's Governor and other administrators, a meeting heard yesterday.

The managers of Surin's best-known resorts and villa estates were called to the Thalang District Offices yesterday by the senior district officer, Palad Natchapon Kongkreag.

In an hour of talks, the managers explained why they objected to the party being held at Surin beach.

At that point, a representative of the party organisers joined the meeting. The man, who gave his name as Edward, told the managers that the event had already been approved.

He gave some details of security arrangements and assured the resort and villa representatives that all planning was in hand for the event. Decisions about whether compensation would be paid rested with ''the directors,'' he said.

Most of the public parkland area behind Surin beach is to be fenced off and the floating ocean stage will be just 40 metres offshore, he said.

Any rooms that were vacated due to cancellations would be welcomed and filled by the organisers of the Electronic Dance Music Festival, he said.

Mr Edward left before the meeting concluded, telling the managers: ''We are bringing 40,000 people from overseas to Phuket and 40 top music stars. You should be grateful.''

The two-day New Year event was announced by celebrity Paris Hilton in Bangkok in late October without consultation with Surin beach businesses or Surin residents.

Eight resort and villa managers pointed out in an Open Letter to Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusud that while they welcomed the music festival being held on Phuket, Surin was the wrong place and New Year was the wrong time.

It's understood that Governor Maitree has since held talks with the party organisers, administrators and residents' representatives, but not the resort and villa managers.

The period between Christmas and New Year is ''peak season'' on Phuket when almost all accommodation on Phuket is fully booked months in advance. Spare seats on flights in and out of Phuket are rare.

As the managers told the Palad yesterday - before learning from Mr Edward that the event had already been approved - families traditionally come to Surin at that time of the year for relaxing seaside holidays.

Frederic Varnier, General Manager of the Amanpuri, asked the Palad: ''Is it going to happen or not?'' He did not get an answer until later, from Mr Edward.

Mr Varnier said that Amanpuri had become the first resort around Surin beach 25 years ago and other Surin resorts, all family-oriented, had opened and grown since then.

One damaging incident over New Year could now put more than two decades of hard work at risk, he said.

''My point is that this party has the potential to destroy in two nights what has taken 25 years to build,'' he said.

''I see nothing in this that is good for the Amanpuri, nothing that is good for Surin and nothing that is good for Phuket.

''We are so far apart. There is no chance of compromise. We have been here for a long time. We know how things work.''

Larry Cunningham, manager of the Chava Surin, said the resort this year won an award as the best family resort in Thailand and Number 6 in Asia.

He added that New Year would see the Chava ''full of children'' because the Amanapuri and other resorts had given Surin the reputation of being ''the No. 1 family area of Phuket.''

''My question is, what will I say to the parents in the mornings of the 31st and January 1 whose children have not been able to sleep all night? Who will we contact for compensation?''

A masterplan shows the whole area of the former royal golf course being used for the party. HM The King's pavilion, erected to mark his 80th birthday, is likely to be surrounded by exuberant party goers.

Mr Varnier told Mr Edwards: ''You're going to do it. We really need to know what is happening with two issues: security and compensation.''

Mr Edward gave assurances that security was being catered for but any decision on compensation would rest with ''the directors.''

When I was of the age to go to these events it just was not worth attending unless you had a bag of party tricks for the festivities. Who would risk being of possession of anything like that in Thailand? The police will be all over this event and out for a big pay day. Whilst there are some music acts I am very keen to see again, it is not worth the hassle.

Good gift for local decision-makers for the Christmas/New Year period.

Is it true that the entire beach will be closed to the Public from 1.30pm until 7am?

Editor Comment:

There are two interpretations of what's meant by the term ''public'' beaches on Phuket. One is that the beaches should be open and accessible to everyone at all times, the other is that the beaches are open and accessible to anyone for any kind of purpose, commercial or otherwise, at any time. Does that answer your question?

The police will, most likely, keep their eyes closed for drugs! Only excessive behavior which can be viewed by "onlookers" and which might be "YouTubed" will get attention.
They will have the instruction from "higher up " to prevent any damage to Thailand's reputation.

So i wonder... if all is fenced off and Catch Beach Club is also giving a new years party. (see on their website) How does that work??? Two parties at one location ? Music wise?

A real ... Charmer. Bringing 40,000 from abroad, can't wait to see that. Maybe that Denmark consulting is a little jumpy because of its rising costs.

Why not Patong?
They will damage one of the nicest beach on the island. Patong has the reputation for its nightlife and the beach where turtles would lay eggs 20 years ago is already damaged. Also the accommodation facilities are much better and people won't enjoy the beauty of the turquoise waters as the event takes place during the night. I truly believe that what is for Patong should remain in Patong! Sadly they community will destroy what makes them live. Don't get me wrong as I believe it is great to place Phuket on an international scale of place to be but it's again a short term vision of a quick $?

I still don't get it? How are they going to bring in such numbers? It would mean an extra 100 747's when Phuket Airport is already over crowded. How will immigration cope? It does not add up.

They have already suggested tents for accommodation. Assuming a small number find proper accommodation, that still requires in the region of 8-10,000 tents!

What happened to the governor's comment that approval will only be granted if all parties come to a compromise?
This reads like someone walked into a meeting, made grand declarations without evidence and walked out again. Should there not be some written permission or something to say the approval has been granted by the appropriate individual/s? Wouldn't all of the details related to security have to have been presented in order to gain such approval?
Sounds like bullying tactics without anything official to back it up to make the managers give up. Don't give up - sounds like a load of rubbish.

. I was so looking forward to visiting your town now I'm so disappointed that you would have this rave at Surin. Noise, alcohol, drugs, this had better be safe for all the tourist that are visiting for a family holiday that were booked long before this rave was organised and approved. we booked at Surin because it is a family holiday place. Not any more. Thank you again for destroying our holiday.

@Logic. So many things don't add up about this event. I live just up the road from the venue and there is absolutely no sign a major event is being planned.

The promoters have stated that extra aircraft will laid on for party goers but the airport say they have no room for anymore.

Even if enough tents could be found to provide 'accommodation' there simply is no site suitable locally to pitch them.

As for the floating stage, I have to presume that they are building this in one of the local shipyards with a plan to tow it down for the event ?

Strange thing is, it's not possible to buy tickets through their website - the link is dead. Only 15 days to go. Will it happen?

@Kel. The links under Distribution Channel is not dead - they don't exist.
It is only plain images, watch the mouse, it don't change to a hand when hovering or inspect the element and find a flat image without any link connection.

Strange indeed that is.

Dear moderator,

is there and reason why you publish some comments and some not?

(moderated)

Editor Comment:

The reason why we publish some comments and not others is because some people are honest and others are not.

You may be a deejay, and your views may be valid, but for you to have a real opinion here you'd need to use a real name and perhaps also add a telephone number. That way, we'd all know whether you were serious or just crticising this event for your own reasons.

You are a very funny forum. Please show me one person on here that uses a real name or posts a phone number.

Its okay if you don't want my opinion on your wall. I have no idea what would be wrong with it, but you will have your reasons.

Just for your info. I have been in the Dj business for 25 years and I know what I am talking about.

Great. But for you to criticise or praise this event you have to take ''responsibility'' for what you say. Not many people have so far.

@deejay. I use my real name, its Robin Sole, so dont make any jokes about it. I was born with it and so it will be.

@deejay: I posted a comment under this name, which I am using since my first comment. The comment has not been published but it has been more or less a personal opinion to the editor, so I definitely can live with it.
Opposed to other online media on this island the criteria for publishing are quite easy to understand here.

The basic ticket holder area in the park. Problem is you can't see the stage for the old growth trees.

There are no large screens shown on the drawing. Will the tall trees be removed so the stage is visible from the park? If I was paying 4,000 baht for the day, I would expect to see something.

There has been too much recent cutting and trimming. I hope to be wrong on this.

I believe you are Australian, Alan, so that accounts for the bullshit you come out with regularly. It's your bat and your ball. Publish what you like and if you don't like it.... Interesting concept, though, an editor who practices censorship.

Editor Comment:

The reason why your comment hasn't been published is because it's libelous, Ga, and not based on fact. Readers who lack the ability to understand what can and can't be said by anonymous commenters often resort to mindless personal abuse and bigotry.

@GA..not nice to tar a whole nation, with the same brush...there are people from every nation that sprout a lot of bullshit, some would say your statement is racist.
