AN AUSTRALIAN tourist has plunged five storeys to his death in a mysterious incident at a popular five-star resort on Phuket.
The man fell about 3am today, police said, after attempting to enter the wrong room at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa at Karon, the beach destination to the south of Patong.
Colonel Boonlert On-klang, of Chalong police station, named the man as Nathan Edwards, 25, of Adelaide.
The colonel said that about 3am, Mr Edwards returned to his resort and intended to go to his room. His room number was 5105 but he found himself in another building, where he tried his keycard in the door of Room 515.
He heard noises inside, and knocked and kicked on the door, Colonel Boonlert said.
The man and woman inside Room 515, a couple from Syria, called security but did not open the door.
By the time security reached the scene, the man had apparently fallen from the exterior walkway to the ground below, Colonel Boonlert said.
Mr Edwards' body is at Vachira Hospital in Phuket City and will be sent to Bangkok tomorrow for a full autopsy. Embassy officials have been informed.
The Hilton at Karon has about 700 rooms spread through several buildings in a garden setting.
