PHUKET: Evidence of Phuket's growing importance as an international air hub comes with figures that place the Phuket-Suvarnabhumi Bangkok route among the top 25 busiest air routes in the world.
According to statistics at centreforaviation.com, Phuket-Bangkok currently ranks at No 24, ahead of such routes as Hong Kong-Beijing Capital (No. 42) and New York John F. Kennedy-London Heathrow (No. 32).
The top 10 on the list are all in the Asia-Pacific region, a fresh indication of the preeminence of Asia especially as developing countries increasingly power the global economy.
According to the Top 50 Routes (29-Aug-2011 to 04-Sep-2011, System traffic), ranked by seats, there were 74,836 seats on flights between Bangkok and Phuket, placing the island route one behind Beijing Capital-Guangzhou Baiyun and one ahead of Cairo International-Jeddah King Abdulaziz.
Tokyo Haneda-Sapporo Chitose holds No. 1 spot with 269,500 seats and Tokyo Haneda figures in four of the top 10. Sydney-Melbourne is fourth.
