PHUKET will host a major international advertising conference next year in place of Pattaya. The organisers of ADFEST 2011 thought it was ''time for a change'' and decided to switch to Phuket.
This year's gathering was cancelled because of political unrest and security was on the minds of conference organisers when they met with Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha at Provincial Hall in Phuket City today.
Festival Director Wilaiwan Surapongchai remembered Governor Tri from his time in Pattaya and was reassured by what he told her.
About 1000 visitors from 15 nations are expected for ADFEST 2011 from March 14-19 at Phuket's Moevenpick Resort on Karon beach, with Japanese likely to be prominent.
Highlights will be the judging of the annual competition held by the Asia Pacific Advertising Association from March 14-16, followed by an exhibition and conference from March 17-19.
''We wanted to go to a different place and Phuket is a good destination,'' Khun Wilaiwan said.
Governor Tri described ADFEST 2011 as ''a good opportunity to involve the advertising industry and showcase Phuket.''
Television and film will be the main focus, with opportunities for student directors to compete and to learn. A beach party is also planned.
Phuket's direct flights and distance from Bangkok may have been a factor. Last year, red shirt protesters invaded a resort in Pattaya where a summit involving Asean leaders was about to begin. A few months later, the Asean Foreign Ministers met on Phuket without a hitch.
