More water on the way: Flashback to last month's Patong floods

Phuket Weather Alert: Storms Reduce Beach Rescues

Saturday, September 24, 2011
PHUKET: Heavy rain is forecast for Phuket and other Andaman provinces on Sunday, with the posibility of more bad weather next week.

Seas of up to three metres are being predicted as a depression tracks in from the direction of Vietnam.

The National Disaster Warning Centre also issued an alert for people in the North, Northeast and East as well as the South.

Officials continue to warn of the possibility of flash floods and landslides as the dousing of Phuket and other provinces continues.

While bad weather is never welcomed by tourists, is does alleviate pressure on Phuket Lifeguard Club members who patrol 13 popular west coast Phuket beaches.

Latest figures from the Phuket Lifeguard Club in the period August 2 to September 1 illustrate the scale of their work in the Phuket low season.

Phuket is divided into three regions. Region One - Ya Nui, Nai Harn, Kata Noi, Kata and Karon - produced incidents in which Phuket patrols came to the aid of eight Thais and 59 foreigners.

One foreigner was hospitalised, and one died.

In Phuket's Region Two - Patong, Kamala and Laem Singh - there were 10 Thais and 51 foreigners rescued with one Thai hospitalised but no deaths.

The result was even more positive in Phuket's Region Three - Surin, Bang Tao, Nai Yang and Nai Thon - with three Thais and four foreigners rescued, but no hospitalisations and no deaths.
