Just how the accused, Phanupan Sukwong, 23, thought he could get away with it is a bit of a mystery.
As so often is the case these days, security camera footage proved he was lying when he tried to play a ''good Samaritan'' by returning the stolen bag - without its valuable contents.
Malaysians Liow Keong, 49, Zhang Cheng, 47, and a third friend went to the Sofa Pub in Phuket City but left 30 minutes without the shoulder bag in which two of them had placed their valuables.
Checking with the pub off Thalang Road once they realised their mistake, staff told them the bag wasn't there.
The following morning, the Malaysians went to the Tourist Police.
Coincidentally, Khun Phanupan reported soon after that he'd found the bag in the road outside Satree Phuket School.
Not so easily deceived, the officers checked the security cameras at the pub and found conclusive evidence that the waiter had taken the bag, returning it the following day without an IPad, a mobile telephone, 2000 baht in cash, 200 ringgit and 500 yuan.
The stolen items were found and returned.
Khun Phanupan has pleaded guilty to serious charges of night theft.
Another criminal mastermind bites the dust.
